That's perfectly correct. Many sites don't know how to classify them, and trying to book online, as you've seen, is even worse, as they only normally have tourers or tents / trailer tents
I appreciate that others have had different experiences, but I've never found a site that wouldn't accept them. It's just a case of how you present it.
The Caravan Club accept them, both in the club, and on their sites, and treat them the same as a caravan. In fact, most places will treat them as a folding caravan, and hence a 'tourer'. This is mainly because they sit on a pitch in the same way as a tourer, and, often, require electric hookup like a tourer.
I always play to the site I'm booking for. If the site takes tents, but isn't licensed for caravans, I call it a trailer tent. If it takes caravans, but not tents, I refer to it as a folding caravan. So far, it's never been challenged, but, if you have any doubt, it's always advisable to call the site first, to be sure.
