Hi all,

Perhaps a daft question, we have a Vango Icarus 600 at the moment and are thinking of trying to pick up a cheap old trailer tent as a bit of a project and to free up some space in the car when travelling.

I have my license from only 1998 so I think folding campers are out of the running, they all seem to be about 900kg's gross weight and I am limited to 750.

Now what I cant figure out is if we went away say Friday night and came home Sunday it seems a bit daft putting up the whole thing, the main unit and the huge awning and so to save time we would be looking at just the main unit unless staying for longer.

Are any of the older ones able to be used like that? all the ones I've seen on ebay seem to have big holes in the canvas for the poles to attach to which would suggest not but I just thought I would ask.

Anyway, thanks for reading my ramble and thanks for your help

Tim

We have a trigano galleon you can just use the cabin independently without awning, this is one of the reasons webrought it, greaf for quick overnight stays.

Hi,
We had a trigano chantilly & used just the cabin for o'night stops & short stays. TVS in Bolton fashioned a sun canopy for us (just a piece of canvas with rivets in to our measurements, much cheaper than an actual canopy). This gave us extra cover especially with a wind break, but was very quick to set up,

Fiona

Several FC's come in at 750kg or less ... so don't write them off!

hi just some info on what you can tow. as long as you are not driving a big heavy 4x4 (over 2.5 ton) you will be able to tow any of the folding campers on a post 97 licence.
also as said above the earlier cruisers and pullmans are only 750kg,and the smaller ones are even lighter.

750 kg is the max unbraked weight of any trailer by law. It just happens that most TTs are unbraked, and therefore below 750kg. FCs are usually braked, but unless you have a car with a MAM of 2.6 ton or more, 900kg would be within your limits on a post-98 license.

I went from tent to TT, and this holiday, I am hoping to pack up the awning the night before and just have the cabin so I can make a quick getwaway to our next site the day after.

in that case a pre 96 cruiser which are 6 berth,or the 4 berth models are under the 750kg.when we had a tt really could not make do without the awning unless it was good weather.

Hi Tim,

There are a quite a few folding campers at the sub 750kg level. Most, like the Pennine Aztec, Apollo, Fiesta, Conway Countryman and Trigano Radger 415DL are 4 berth, but there are a number, like the pre '96 Pennine Pullmans that are 6 berth, so don't rule them out. Obviously, if you did move over to a 'normal' car, you would have no problem with any folding camper, as the largest one, the Pennine Pathfinder is a little over 1,000kg.

Have a look at a Riva Dandy. The designer, delta and dart are all max fully loaded weight of 500kg yet are 4 berth and good comfy folding campers. All are braked.

This link gives you lots of pics but you will probably buy a lot cheaper privately.

You can get an old one for £500 ish and they last for years.

Not sure but I thought the max combined weight of car and trailer must be no more than 3750kg on a post 97 licence. Are you sure you can go as high aas 750kg

The max combined on a post 97 licence is, actually, 3,500kg, not 3,750kg, BUT that is only if the trailer weighs more than 750kg. If it weighs less (as we've now established it will have to) then the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer, together increases from 3,500kg to 4,250kg. On that basis, 3,100kg for the transit, plus max of 750kg for the trailer is 3,850kg, so within the 4,250kg limit.

Bald convict - you certainly can use without awning. Good for overnight stops such as traveling South in France. Our TT only takes about 20 mins to put up. Incidentally I'm about to sell our TT if your interested?

Well I pulled the trigger as it were (Sorry Kevimarr I didn't see your reply till just now) and bought a trigano Chantilly GL, looks really nice condition and can't wait to try it out.

Came with loads of extras and looks pretty much new all for the princely sum of only £300 :)

Has a MAM of 450Kg's so 3,550KG's when it and the van is all fully loaded, plenty under my 4,250KG limit

Many thanks for confirming the rules on the weights Blue Sky Pennine, the way they are written it all seems so complicated!
