Can members tell me if the purchase of a gas fridge is recommended ie worth the carriage to keep perishables and wine cool. I do like red wine in its place but sometimes only a cold glass of chardoney will do. Do members have any tips for chilling without gas, usual cold box excepted
If you are willing to spend about £70, you can still get a water-cooled device called an Easicool - they used to be fitted in VW Campers, and I had one in my past camping life (I had no fridge), They look a bit like a cool-box stood on end, but they keep cool by the evaporation of water - you just put a cup (or more, if it's warm and breezy) of water into it each day and keep it somewhere ventilated. It won't cool warm things, but it keeps cold things cold for DAYS!! I never had sour milk when I relied on one, even over long (2 week) holidays when ice-packs were not available.
you can buy a cheap cold box, those that require frozen cooling bars. Most campsite bars or markets can freeze them for you, even for free. If you camp by a river or sea, put your lagers and wine in a bag, tie a rope and store them underwater.
We've done many years with a traditional coolbox and ice packs which was fine until a hot summer, when the butter melted, the milk turnes sour by 11.30am and any bacon we had had fried in the box. Last year we invested in a three way fridge (Electrolux) and although it was expensive we love it! We can keep milk, cheese, beer and have even made ice cubes in a scorching heat in France. I'd recommend the fridge anyday. There's nothing worse than returning to your tent form the beach to make a cup of tea with curdled cheesy milk, covered in melted butter.
we used a coolbox that plugged into your car ciggie lighter when travelling to the site, great for sannies and juice for the road/arrival ,and then we had an adaptor that you plugged into the mains ,which had a ciggie lighter adapter on it for the coolbox
ive always put my wine in a bucket filled with cold water, its works fine, ive just brought one of them yellow foldable bucket of ebay for 1.25p ( argos sell them for 5.00) im going to put the wine in there on my next holiday
We always use a bucket of cold water and keep it in the shade. Float the flora on the top. Change the water regularly (every day) and everything keeps fine.
The bucket doubles as a fire bucket as well - just remember to take the contents out first!!!
And a container for packing things in whilst travelling.
Have toyed with the idea of getting a fridge but the bucket always comes tops on the list of pros and cons.
we bought a coleman super power chiller 36litre deluxe 12volt/240 volt coolbox (can be used like an ordinary fridge or coolbox) and my god its cold!!!! Just used it for the first time over a 5 day break away and had the thing unplugged for up to 10 hours at night and everything still really cold in morning! Got ours from Costco, cost £70 including the 240volt adaptor, bargain as far as im concerned as I dont have any problems using this even in the hottest of summers (fingers r crossed we get one!!)
Loopieloo
------------- need a smaller unit for smaller car..boo hoo
We bought a three way chest type fridge which worked well. Our cooker ran off the same cylinder when we moved on to a caravan we used it in the awning. Ran it at home on mains to get it cold and just left it to its own devices in the car with frozen milk in it to maintain temperature.
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
we've camped for six summers with coolbox and bucket of water which was ok, but last year got a 3 way fridge for my birthday. BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!! would never go back,
Already have a 12 volt cool box never thought of using it on mains electric where did you get the gizmo to hook it up. Fourth dog arrived five weeks ago and my VW Caddy van looks like its going to be full to bursting hence not wishing to carry gas fridge if unnecessary
When in France year before last, it was an EXTREMELY hot summer and all the fridges - throughout the site - had a hard time keeping things cold - let alone frozen.(People were arriving thinking they're fridges were broken)
Try and keep the vent well out of the sunshine i.e. not on the side where the sun rises - things went a lot better this year by doing just that.
