Hi.....I have recently bought a Pennine Pathfinder and I am not sure whether I need to insure it, I have contacted my car insurance company and informed them I will be towing but not sure whether legally it needs to be separately insured whilst on the road?
There is no legal requirement to insure a caravan or any trailer as you are covered for third party risks while towing on your car insurance. However, unless you insure your camper you are not covered for fire/theft/accident damage to it. So your choice, if its only worth a few £100s then you might not think its worth it but obviously if its newer & worth £1000s then obviously its a good idea.
There are a lot of recommendations for http://www.insurancefortrailertents.co.uk/?f=1s3s
on the forum, and I have just insured my second hand Pathfinder with them.
£78 so not big money. Worth it I think.
We Bought a small 2nd hand caravan, only towed it 80miles and a wheel came off whilst towing on a country lane near home, damaged the van beyond repair. Thankfully the wheel careered down the road and into the hedge before any other vehicle came toward us.
We lost around £1,500 worth of van and upgrade work.
A sobering lesson all round, insurance is important - we could have had claim made against us if the wheel had hit anything.
Now have a FC, happier towing, and fully insured.
Peace of mind all round
Docile to agree more, check the wheel. It's.
We have caravanned for over 30urs, always had the vans checked and wheels changed professionally.
This guy said everything had been checked, new tyres etc. didn't say it was he who did it!
Now fully insured for £78 through insurancefortrailertents........decided it's better to be safe than sorry (especially after reading your experience Sandra).
All we need is the sun to shine as we are going to swanage and using the camper for the first time next week! Wish me luck as I have no idea how to put the awning up!!
