Little paws, have you successfully connected the trailer plug before? I wonder if the trailer is new and you have a different connector? The newer ones have 13 pins.
If it is the newer style, then push the plug in and rotate the outer collar clockwise to lock it secure the pins properly in place. You should then be able to see a round disc on the top to confirm all is good.
