Hi

We are meeting up with some friends for a weekend next month. They tent camp without EHU and we have booked the same site but we have booked an EHU pitch. Depending on the layout of the campsite, and how far away we are, I wondered if we might be better going in the non-electric area with them.

So, have you used a folding camper without electric? What do we need to know? We have never used the fridge on gas before but assume it all works. We have got a fairly new leisure battery.

Have you tested fridge on gas? If it has not been run on gas for a long period then suggest clean out burner as all sorts of debris could have collected in there. Best is to blow out with high pressure airline but otherwise a small brush and plenty of meths should do the job.

No need for ehu really, battery lasts a few days if lights/tap used sparingly but take torches and battery led lantern as well, also water carrier with spout in case battery goes flat.

We camp with friends who are in a tent, we ask the camp site owners if we can be put together and have never been refused.

Not allowed to link to my site, but you already know it, so, if you have a look at the Information page, there's a whole feature on using a folding camper without gas. This year, I'm having at least 2 trips without EHU, one next week, to Shell Island, and the other to Oxwich Bay, with family. I've geared everything in my camper to run off gas / 12V, so it all runs off 240V, when available, but I barely notice the difference when it isn't. I use Kampa Sabre 150 LED lighting in the camper, a 12V TV / DVD and microwave, fridge on gas etc. I've just bought an 80W brief case solar panel, to keep the battery topped up while I'm using it. Agree it's worth testing the fridge, on gas, beforehand, but, also, you may find they can come over to your area, even if they don't use EHU. Always worth asking.

It would help if you put the 'e' into your home page link so that worked.

We have done a week without electric once - often do weekends, normal or long - fridge on gas is colder than on electric, light and tap pump run off your battery (top tip, make sure it's fully charged before you go) other lights either solar powered or own batteries.   Obviously, any cooking will have to be done on the gas stove, so leave the toaster, kettle etc at home

It really is quite liberating to be 'off grid' even for a few days, so relax and enjoy it

Not an option, unfortunately. My site appears to be blocked on here. Just tried to correct it, and it wont allow me to put my web site details in at all. I can link to anyone else's, but it would appear I'm not allowed any links to my site at all. Now it has completely removed the home page details.

Is it possible there is a last electric pitch before the none electric pitches start, and you can then get the last electric before none electric.
Hope that makes sense, you could then all be together and still have electric.
Ring the site and ask them if they can do this for you

Thanks all. Of course Blue Sky I should have thought about your website and all the great info on there.

I am still undecided. We tent camped for 10 years, most of those without EHU, so going without electric doesnt phase me, even if we couldnt get the fridge to work. Not sure how the teenagers would feel about not having chargers for their phones but it's only for a weekend.

However EHU would be good because we are all set up for electric and we are catering for all of us. No reason why our friends couldnt come over and sit with us - do we really need to be next to each other?

I did mention this to the campsite when I booked but they were a bit vague so I think it may have to be decided when we get there.

You can charge your mobiles from your leisure battery. You just need an adapter to plug in a car charger to your 12v system and your phone will charge then! I bought one from go outdoors! It was about £7 I think.
I have camped with EHU in my fiesta for two weekends recently and I have to say that I did not miss the leccy! Used the gas fridge and the built in light. Took lanterns just in case! Absolutely no problems.

We mainly camp without EHU in our tt as we never used it as tent campers. We use cheap square batteries to run the water and a leisure battery for everything else. Just a word of warning, our gas ran out last week and it took a full day to find a replacement as they seem to be quite thin on the ground in southern Scotland atm. We ran the fridge for the day on the leisure battery and it used up quite a lot of the charge.
