Hi Guys. We have a 21 year old Conway Royale that has been reproofed by bodgers!!!When we recently bought it we were told that it had just been reproofed with brick sealant! Took it out the weekend only to find that it leeks like a sieve. What can we do. Does anyone advise soap flake to wash and the Fabsil or what ? Please help us

Hi,
Possibly not so much a bodge as you might think. He probably used Thomsons Brick Sealant. If you search on this forum you'll find plenty of people discussing its pros and cons. I used it myself about 7 years ago on my pathfinder and had no issues. However since then I've heard on these forums and noticed myself that the details on the tin no longer mention canvas along with brick as potential uses. Therefore end of last Summer I reproofed using the much more expensive Fabsil (use Amazon to get a large tin). Difficult to know what is best now but as it is leaking you'll only lose price of a tin of Fabsil to see if you can save it. Firstly though give it a wash using a solution of pure soap and warm water. (I doubt it'll remove the brick sealant though). I just grated part of a bar of pure soap into a bucket of water then rubbed it on with a sponge. Then give it a good rinse to remove the soap, let it dry then brush on the the Fabsil. I reckon you should be okay.

I think it was Simple Pure Soap.

Also I got thru a whole 5litre tin of Fabil just on my Pathfinder cabin canvas. I did splash it on quite liberally though. All seemed waterproof straight after doing it last September. However first trip away next week for over 3 weeks down to S.France so will find out then if all is watertight!

Pure soap flakes or Nikwax tech wash, then reproof by using NiKwax wash direct waterproofing or air dry then use Fabsil.

Good luck

My brother goes fishing, and with their tents they all swear by Thompsons waterproofer, which is bricks sealer
Just use soap flakes to clean your canvas nothing else.
It cleaned my canvas and think I put the result of it up on here somewhere.
Then like others have said re proof.
Good luck
