Please can anyone help - I have a Conway Tardis folding camper (1986) and it is stiff winding it up and winding it down - we think it just needs greasing-lubricating - but we are not sure where we could possibly lubricate/grease it - WE CANNOT SEE WHERE WE COULD PUT THE LUBRICATE/GREASE - if anyone can help we could be very grateful - or if anyone knows if it might be something else? - THANK YOU
It does sound like a problem with the cables but I am afraid I have no specific help to offer. Try posting on the Conway Owners website. You may well be able to obtain the help you need from someone there. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/directory2/details.asp?revid=631&typeid=
you may find that one of the cables has fallen of the runner inside the arm that lifts the roof, its easy to find out which one once the roof is opened a little but be careful, it takes two people. one to wind and listen/feel for the resistance then stop, the other person to go around each corner and lift, if the winder then finds its easier then thats usually the problem corner, now the hard part , get the roof to the highest point and prop up with a piece of wood it needs to be 4 ft undo the bolts that hold it on from the roof then gently pull the arm out of the trailer till u can see the cable it should run freely as i said just taking the weight off the cable may be enough to get it running properly again usually the cable falls of the pulley and gets jammed in the bolt if this is the case dont stick your fingers in use a screwdriver cause it will have your fingers off if anything moves!!!! push it free with the screwdriver, it would be wise to get a replacement from pennine for the near future as this is only the start of your problems when this happens, best fixed at home and not on a campsite!
Hi - thank you so much for your advice - does anyone know anyone who could look at this for me as I do not think I would be able to do it myself - or is there somewhere that would replace the wires for me - I think Conway/the Pennine Group would charge a lot - does anyone know of anywhere nearish to me (I live 7 miles from Machester) that could look at it or replace the whole wires for me as I would be worried if they failed to work etc once on site - if anyone has replaced the actual wires themselves please could you let me know who to do it etc - as a last resort I might try and get my dad to replace the wires but I would have to tell him how to do it etc -
god knows!!! I have tried to find someone, for the last 3 years but still havent found anyone that does actually know what they are doing, plenty who say they can have a go!! I dont want then to have a go when Im paying for them to fix it, we gave up after our first hard top and bought a uk (conway) one but the lack of info is still aparent, I learnt from the hard way spending months underneath the damm thing, its easy to get the cable, any lifting company will have it, but the length is critical of the cables.
Thank you for taking the time to reply again - I have found somewhere - they are called Camperlands in Manchester/Lancashire but they will not look at it until the winter!!! - I will keep trying - the man who I bought a previous Conway Tardis off replaced the cables himself and I wish I could find his number somewhere as I would pay him to do it - if anyone has replaced the cables themselves please get in touch and I would pay you to replace them. - we are stuck with a camper now until the winter!!!
I think that I would have a word with there general manager, WINTER what use is that? Sorry your not important enough, you havent bought something brand new from them for £000's !!!!!!!
Have you checked with the conway owners club as I know they did have a few tardis owners on there.. They may be able to give you more names and numbers ..

I recently posted a question about the winding gear on my Cardinal (same basically as yours just newer model) tonyl said I should try Caseys I did, he could not have been more helpfull Better than any other dealer I have contacted. I cannot carry out the repairs myself as I am disabled. Look at the entry from tonyl under my request for the address and telephone No etc.
Hi - thank you so much for taking the time to reply - I tried Caseys and the bloke I spoke to said it could be absolutely anything - he said it could be a sock or something - but there was no way he could even look at it until October as they were snowed under with work (the same response I got from Camperlands in Manchester - I just wish I could find someone who has replaced the wires before on one of these and I would pay them to fix mine - I have a 3 and a 4 year old looking to go away in it at the next bank holiday and at this rate we will not be able to go. - thanks anyway for your recommendation.
Give Castlecroft at Radcliffe (near Bury) a go - when I was talking to them at one of our visits before we took delivery of the Pathfinder, they mentioned re-cabling a Cardinal. The place is part of the JR Leisure group, but the sales and service staff are many of the extended family that used to run Mitchells at Wakefield before CCC took over. It wouldn't hurt to give them a go - you've nothing to lose in asking.
