Hi,

I've been looking over the 'new to me' Camp-let royal - it's an old one of 1990 vintage.

It has a melted lump of plastic (pictured) that I think might be a water pump.

I'm really looking for confirmation of this and advice of where it connects to as I want to ensure it is dead if I can't replace it before we venture out with the trailer in a couple of weeks.

Hi not a camplet owner.
If its a water pump there should be an impeller at bottom where your thumb is.

In the 2 trailer tents I have had they were powered by 2 batteries in a plastic box. Microswitch on the tap switched the pump on.

Does that help?

Hi, yes that's your water pump or it used to be! If you look under the plastic bowl in the sink there should be a battery box with two large batteries which power the pump. Unless someone has converted the system to run off a leisure battery, that should be the only power connection.

Well the bodgers have been at it, the wiring has been modified and appears to disappear into the light clusters.

Looks like it's multimeter time to trace the wiring out.

Also spotted the kitchen door seal is leaking, it's probably the original so I'll hunt a new one down - camperlands?

Hi, sounds like someone was running the tap off the towbar electrics? Is the battery box still in place? If so, there should be a PCB inside the box which you could reconnect to the tap switch.Looking at the amount of damage to the pump I wonder if it has been placed on the cooker when the bars are still hot. (Almost done that myself)

There's no batterybox evident. It's not something I'm too worried about, but I need to locate the wiring to makesure it's dead.
I've got a good few jobs I want to do to it over winter, so I'll probably re-instate it then.

Camplets sometimes had a extra pins in the 12N plug which fed 12v from the car to the little socket on the right of the kitchen. Pump looks like it has been running dry,probably whilst the previous owner was driving home

Hi Miserly, think I remember you mentioning in one of your posts that you had converted the camplet tap from the batteries to 12v? How did you do it please?

A simple 12v rectified transformer with the output connected to the pump. It can sit under the sink. It will have to be a decent output though,pumps can take a couple of amps. Most pumps are not polarity conscious,and many will run on ac but this will shorten their life. I wouldn't bother though,the batteries last for ages,and rechargeable ones are available.

Thanks Miserly, I had chance to put the tent up properly and found a transformer in a box of bits we where given with it. This connects to a modified spliced in connector on the tow socket - it then energises the fridge, 12v socket and the water pump circuit.

Now to find out how much current the fridge draws - it overloaded my digital meter so need the analogue one from work which has a greater range. I'm wondering if a leisure battery would run the electrics for a weekend, then charge it from the car when towing.

I have a 1992 Camplet most likely the same as yours:


There should be two wires possibly red and black under the gas rings these connect directly to the water pump. One of the wires feed from the tap.
There won't be a battery box on a 1990 Camplet.
They take there feed from two places:
The White plug that plugs into the tow hitch.
And the 12v cig lighter socket on the hinge side of rear door next to the fridge/warmer.


You can power from a battery or 240v - 12v transformer
To connect from a battery you will need a power lead with a male 12v cig plug plugged into the female 12v cig socket pictured above.
And to run from a 240v - 12v transformer you will need a double ended male - male 12v cig plug plugged into both the socket pictured above and your 12v transformer.
There is a push/pull switch pictured above out is on in is off

Thanks for that Garry, indeed yours looks the same as the one I have, although I don't have the extra awning. Am on the look out for an annex over winter....

Mine has the wiring modified by the towbar socket, 2 rather horrible crimped connectors hanging out of the loom, and a 240-12v transformer with a very long wire on the output side with equally as horrible crimped connectors - I'm guessing these are spliced into the cables that normally power the kitchen when it's hooked up to a car.
