hi,

I'm thinking about buying a trailer tent, used one for around £200 (seen a few on eBay).

How good are they on keeping the water out?

How easy are they to repair?

Any advise or types of trailer tents to look at?

Also if the tent is worth £200, I'm not bothered if it gets stolen, but will I need any kind of insurance to tow on roads, or will my normally fully comp ins cover it?

How water repellent they are will really depend on how well they have been looked after. If well cared for, the canvas will remain water tight for 50 years or more. However, other factors can affect the water proofing, such as if it has been washed with detergents, or even treated with water proofing solution(which can affect long term water proofing of the canvas, itself). As I say, though, a well looked after one should give you years more use without treatment.

They are pretty easy to repair, although not all repairs look as good as others. Some are semi invisible, and others are reasonably noticeable. All depends on the size and location of the damaged area, but certainly not a difficult job in most cases.

With that sort of budget, you are likely to be looking at what is known as a 'traditional' style trailer tent. If you Google; 'Choosing a folding camper or trailer tent, what are the options', there's a few ideas there to help out, but it is likely to be an older model Conway, Raclet, Jamet or Trigano, with the Conways being the most commonly available.

You are legally covered, whilst towing, however, only third party (even if you have a fully comprehensive policy) so no worries on the legal front, you just wont get your TT cost back, which, as you say, for £200, may not be a major concern. Some insurance companies require you to notify them if you are towing, and some classify tow bars as vehicle modifications, so probably worth a quick word with them before you do tow. Also, some (but not all) household policies may allow you to cover it under 'personal effects away from home', as a named item, however, if they do, it is only likely to cover you for loss / damage on site. Not sure it would cover you whilst towing, but you could check with them.

The one good thing about being wrong is the joy it brings to others..
