Hi.

I have recently purchased a conway cruiser 1996 and was wondering if it's worth investing in a winter cover as it's currently being stored outdoors in my parents driveway.

Is there any particular type of cover I require and are they a necessity or can I cover the trailer tent with additional tarpolin/groundsheets for winter protecting.

Can someone point me in the right direction as it was currently being stored in a garage before purchase and I do want to take good care of it.

Thanx

There are two main types of Winter cover. Those like the Kampa covers are fully breathable, and protect against wind, sun, dirt etc, as well as light showers, but are not fully waterproof and will not keep heavy showers or standing water out. Kampa are the main manufacturers for breathable ones (I have one of these on my Sterling as it is garaged much of the time) or TVS in Bolton or Undercover CI in the Channel Islands if you want a fully water proof one. You can use an ordinary tarpaulin, if you want, but the proper covers look so much better and will fit snuggly on the camper.

I have an old one that is no longer any use to me as I have sold my cruiser.
You don't give your location but you are welcome to it for free if you pay postage.

John

We use the one that was provided by Pennine, when we bought it. As BlueSky says ... they do look neater.
However, things we discovered when we used it outdoors (no longer do as the FC is stored indoors in France, but still use the cover as a dust cover):
1. Make sure you tilt the unit as much as you can (using the jockey wheel at full extension) to encourage rain water 'run off'
2. I used to store our roof box on top of the travel cover (on a couple of planks, so as to avoid any marking or damage to the cover), then put the winter cover over the whole lot .... that way you create a dome effect, which stops any puddle formation, and also provides some air circulation. (If you don't have a roofbox, anything that creates a 'dome' could be used).
3. Many folk advise opening up the FC every couple of months, or so, when the weather is decent, for a day's airing ... anything outdoors is stored at the relative humidity of the ambient ... so, inevitably, some damp will 'be about'.
4. Make sure you take out mattresses, bed pods, linings, seat cushions etc .... anything that can retain damp ... we stored ours under beds indoors.

Sorry to hijack post, Kelper would you advocate taking off soft furnishings if it's stored in a garage? Many thanks!

Ours is stored in the garage all year round and always leave the mattresses, seating are left in I do however take out the linings and curtains an bed pods it is an ideal time to wash them, I leave all cupboard and fridge doors open and remove everything out from under the seats and cupboards and take out the drawers as it's easier than emptying them.

I'd say it depends very much on the garage.
Some garages are very dry ... others are damp.
Does your garage house a boiler, hot pipes, or any source of heat?
It just depends how similar/different your garage is to the outside ambient.
Mattresses will absorb damp ... so maybe, if removing them is difficult (alternative storage), then leave them in and check them from time to time ... you should soon work out whether they are relatively dry, or not.
Nothing worse than sleeping on, even, a slightly damp mattress.

Many thanks, I'd best take them out to store, garage is dry but no heating.

There is no heating in my garage and it's only a 4inch wall but I put on my Kampala winter cover mainly to keep it clean get it out every 6 to 8 weeks for an hour to check for mice and to air it been doing this for 8 years now and never had a problem with damp although to be fair I put a sheet of the large bubble wrap on top of the bed boards when folded and then the transit cover and then the winter cover

I'm sure what you do is absolutely fine, kp ...
we do leave everything in situ in our Pullman, in storage in France .... indoor and dry, not heated .... and the Loire region (where we store) can be cold and wet during winter, and we've never had any problems with damp of any sort (so far!) ... we leave it folded down, travel cover and winter cover ... and all furnishings etc in the FC.
When I stored it at home, in the drive, I used to take everything out and set up as mentioned in my earlier post.
I think that any FC stored indoors is likely to be fine ... you've proved that for your 'modus operandi' .... I suppose it depends on how damp, or not, your garage gets .... our garage is built into the house and doesn't get damp at all ... mind you, we have a freezer in it, which provides some heat, and the doors are hermetically sealed.
Dr T ... you could experiment ... take one mattress out and leave the other in .... then, at the end of the winter do a comparison check ... inform us all of the result! It could be extremely useful research!
