A month or so ago, I received a promotion notice for; "Folding Campers For Beginners. Everything You Will Need To Know About Folding Campers" an e book recently released for Kindle, so I thought I would pre order it for a couple of quid.
Oh dear. This 'book' came out at 43 pages on my tablet (including the front cover, disclaimer page, contents page, and a page with only three lines on it).
The book was, clearly, written by someone who knew next to nothing about folding campers, and appeared to have, simply, copied and pasted a few things he thought might be relevant to folding campers into a fairly disjointed 'book' parts of which had very little, if anything, to do with folding campers. When you have a whole chapter dedicated to; "What is the best family camping tent" you know there are going to be issues. What on earth that has to do with folding campers, I have no idea. There is, also, a generic seven page check list of camping items you would take with you, including things like; 'tent, tarp, and inflatable mattress' along with many other items you would be more likely to take tent camping than in a folding camper, not to mention an extra page on 'camping tips' which had no bearing, whatsoever, on folding campers.
All in all, there were about 20 pages of stuff that was relevant to folding campers (and that cost me a couple of quid) which, OK, is neither here nor there, but a little frustrating when you bear in mind that it's clearly an opportunistic attempt to earn a bit of money with some borrowed material and a bit of padding.
Obviously, this got me thinking. There is a big need for something like this, as there's nothing like it, really, out there, at the moment, so I decided to write my own; The Folding Camper Ultimate Guide. It is a little different from the one on Kindle, as it's over 130 pages long, and all of it relates, directly, or indirectly, to folding campers (and, to a large extent, trailer tents). The other difference is that it is free, for anyone who wants it, to download.
The guide covers all of the basics, like what the available options are, what to look for when buying second hand, and what our legal rights are, if we get it wrong.
It, also, covers all of the day to day essentials, like leisure batteries, storing a camper and which is the best gas to use, through to making the most of things when there is no EHU. It looks at tow bars and electrics, the best heating to use in a folding camper and there is a full pictorial guide to setting up a six berth camper, for anyone who wonders what's involved, and not forgetting the pictorial guide to setting up the divorce in a bag, aka, the awning.
As well as the practical side of campers, I look at a lot of the legal side as well, such as the obligatory section on towing legislation, do we need to insure our units, and what we need to take with us if we are thinking of camping abroad, as well as checking the age of our tyres, and when we need to change them, amongst others.
It's pretty much the culmination of everything I've picked up since I started out with folding campers (which, admittedly, is, only, just coming up to three years ago) so, hopefully, it will be of use to someone.
I can't link to it on here, but I'm happy to email it to anyone who would like a copy, and it's also available to download on the Home page, and Information & Guides page of my web site, if that's easier.
132 pages is a lot to put together in 3 weeks (fortunately, all of the content was already available on the blog or web site, anyway) so there may be a couple of errors here or there. Hopefully there wont be, but happy to get any feedback / ammendments, where applicable.
------------- The one good thing about being wrong is the joy it brings to others..
