Hi there- wondering if anyone can help us. Totally new to trailer tents, having just purchased a cabanon Mercury. Just looking into a trip in May.
Most campsites are only offering us hardstanding pitches? Has anyone any experience of this-we have only ever seen them on grass(even we fell in love with them!)
Thank you
Maybe they're offering you the hardstanding pitches because their grass pitches are a bit waterlogged right now? Have you asked if you can have a grass pitch option?
If you do go on a hardstanding pitch you'll definitely need rock pegs and a tough solid groundsheet for underneath the awning groundsheet, to protect it (if the awning extends over the hardstanding area too - it may be that you can pitch your TT on the hardstanding and the awning on a grass bit beside it). I'm guessing it won't be too comfortable underfoot! Make sure you take some sizeable wooden pads for the bed legs to go onto as I wouldn't like to place them onto pea gravel.
Did a hard standing pitch near Tintagel, Cornwall last year in early April. Grass to wet for use. Also in Cabanon Mercury T.T. Extra groundsheet under awning end and rock pegs. Used a rope fed in/out zig-zaggy formation all around main tent using pegging down points. Then pegged into grass with rope going round pegs.. No problem at all. Water bottles and thermals to sleep in and all toasty, blood getting a bit thin for cold nights at 70 years old!
Thank you- that is really interesting- I suppose given the recent weather to be able to pitch on hard standing a good option..... And you also reminded me to pack the hot water bottles in case!
We took our Solena (bought last weekend) out on Sunday to try all the kit and had to take a hard standing pitch. I put down a heavy duty groundsheet and 2 medium density tarpaulins before risking the zip-in groundsheet. When we packed up this morning, the heavy duty groundsheet had been punctured by a stone but the tarps and the ZIG were intact.
