When we started out we went to the Thetford Camping and Caravanning Club Site which is only an hour from where we live (having first joined- but you don't have to). There will be a C&CC site somewhere near you.

Double check that you have all the essentials - gas and an electric hook up lead etc - and off you go! A spirit level to level up the FC is a must. Making a check list really helps.

I would recommend using a wing mirror extension on the driver's side. I find it very useful.

Just take your time, laugh at all your 'mistakes' and have an adventure.

And DON'T WORRY. Towing an FC is a piece of cake.

Welcome to the club Ellen.

There are a few things you can do at home that make life easier when for when you get to the site.

- Get the bedrooms set up before you leave. I think that in most units you can leave the bedrooms up for packing.
- If you are lucky enough to have a toilet, you can put the fluid in before you travel. This is especially useful if, like us, you have young children who enjoy the novelty and don't always have time to make it to the facilities

Otherwise, that C&CC checklist is a good one.

What unit have you got and is it new or second hand?

Have a Google of; "The Folding Camper Ultimate Guide". covers everything from what you need to take with you, chosing a pitch, the laws of towing (including weights, towing mirrors etc) setting up the camper and the awning, heating, camper insurance, storing the camper, pretty much anything you should need.

Already been asked, but would be good to know what you have bought.

Well. As we have no idea what licence you have, we are at a slight disadvantage
however, if we work on worst case scenario, then we must assume you passed your test after 1 January 1997, in which case, you can tow up to a combined gross weight of 3,500kg. You're right; the Sterling is 750kg, which leaves you 2,750kg for the car. The very heaviest Zafira I can find is 2,545kg for a 2 litre, so you are going to be comfortably within the limit on that basis. Of course, the easiest way to be 100% sure is to check the car's VIN plate for the vehicle gross weight and add it to the 750kg to ensure it's below 3,500kg. This is one of the many advantages of a folding camper. Most cars can comfortably tow them whilst keeping you well within the limit.
