My 14 year old daughter and her friend slept in an inner tent in our awning, I put a groundsheet underneath it. We didn't leave the door of our camper open because we have a dog. Some people like to use pop up tents in the awning.

How old are your children?

Ours slept in the second bed ...

However, they could sleep in the awning ... how you achieve that will depend a lot on personal preference and weather conditions (especially temperature).

A ground sheet will protect from damp ... but if they are on (say) an inflatable or camp beds ... they will be well off the ground.

A good duvet or correct tog sleeping bag, will also provide decent protection.

Having the connecting door open is really a question of whether the children want/need that sort of potential contact .. I'd play it by ear.

You can get a zip in awning annexe/pod for sleeping in ... can get a lining and built in ground sheet.

Ours, eventually moved out into a small Quechua so as to distance themselves from parental encroachments!

my daughter has slept in the awning in a small pop up tent. we left the door unlocked, but I guess that's a personal preference

also be wary that some sites specifically don't allow sleeping in awnings so check before you do
