I'm GOING TO LOOK AT THIS MODEL LATER, OWNED BY AN ELDERLY GENTLEMAN WHO DOESN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT. ANY TIPS ON HOW TO TELL THE AGE AND WHATTO LOOK OUT FOR?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Do you know what exact model it is? There should a number before the SE (like 240, 350, 400 etc). The number denotes the length of the awning area in cm, but, more importantly, it helps to identify the exact model, which we would need to give an idea of age.

The colour schemes on these units changed regularly, but the colours also vary from model to model. If I know the model, I can give yoh an idea of the various colours, and, hence a guide on date. If you have a look on my web site, there is a downloadable 2nd hand buyers guide, which will give you some ideas of what to look out for.

The image link hasn't worked, above. It doesn't matter if you haven't seen it, if you know the model number, as I can give you an idea on colour schemes, so, when you do see it, you will have a rough idea.

The guy said 4/5 years but it's had a new outer tent so I'm guessing older. He doesn't use it but a friend has apparently recently used it and said it was great. For £450 I'm gussing more like 10 years old.

If it's had a new outer tent, that will make it very difficult to age, as the interior fabrics and curtains were largely unchanged for years.

At the end of the day, with something like this, and for £450, the age isn't really important. It's much more about overall condition, and how well it's been stored / looked after. If it's in good nick, whilst it's nice to know, I wouldn't worry too much about the age.

Had a look. It's filthy but solid and good under the dirt. The colour is blue and yellow. Unfortunately it's been put away wet so is covered in mould. Not sure if I could clean the mould off without damaging the canvas/fabric. The outer tent was just a gazebo type thing.

Also couldn't find a number referring to the length.

No, dont touch it with a bargepole. You'd be wasting your money on one covered in mould.

For that sort of money you should be able to find one that's ready to go camping in.

Can't comment on this particular one, but the; "give it to an elderly friend / relative to sell, so he can plead ignorance" trick is one of the oldest in the book. Don't need to tell you, obviously, but avoid!!

Plenty of trailer tents about at the minute. Read the description carefully and make sure you see the trailer tent erected to check for things like mould and mildew and everything's there that should be (bedroom compartments seem to be missing in quite a few adverts i've seen over the years).

I'd personally give a miss to anything that mentions the canvas being dirty and in need of a good clean, if it was just dirty then surely you'd clean it yourself before you sold it, i would anyway!

You should be able to find a good Conway or Trigano for example. Sunncamp are at the cheaper end of the trailer tent market new.

This trailer has just been dropped down to £250. Is it still a bad idea?

I recently bought a Pennine Apollo, in immaculate condition, with barely a mark on the canvas, and an awning that had only been used twice, from new.

I paid £250 for it. I have bought many Aztecs and Apollos, in similar condition for between £100 - £500, so yes, it still a bad idea.

It's very easy to see something and talk ourselves into buying it because it's there. This is NEVER a good idea. I'm not saying you will find one tomorrow, but there are some real bargains out there, if you have the patience to wait and look for them. This is not one of them.
