Thinking of making the switch from tents to Trailer Tent. Does anyone have any advice on a good starter trailer tent, budget around £2000

Take a look at 2nd hand, Ebay, Gumtree etc.

You will be amazed at what trailer tents are for sale for around the £500 mark!

As a start, try Googling; "Choosing a folding camper or trailer tent. What are the options?"

Should get you started. First thing we always advise is to establish whether, in fact, it is a trailer tent you are after, rather than a folding camper. Your budget would get you a nice example of either.

We just did the same switch as the steel poles and time taken on our Outwell Vermont was too much. That said I didn't want to end up with the intricate web of frames that some of the older models had that seem just as problematic. There are others similar but went for the Cabanon "tunnel" type tents i.e. Tabora/Stratos/Jupiter/Mercury as they only had limited poles then narrowed that down to our requirements i.e.min 4 berth but narrower access so hunted for Stratos and Jupiters on the usual sites. Had looked at some other makes like Dandy and CampLet as speed of erecting the main cabin was also a factor but I like how quick these appear to do the entire unit

Have decided on a 4 birth, but want something easy to put up so it can be used for weekends and overnights. What would be suitable for this I am thinking about a Camplet or Camplair? Any advise would be gratefully recieved.

Would suggest that the Camplet would be much easier / quicker than the Camplair to set-up, particularly important if using just for weekends. We looked at the Camplet's but felt that the space of the basic unit wasn't enough as a family unit. For two it would be fine. Also note that the prices are much higher for a Camplet than the equivalent Trigano or Raclet unit, although from reading posts on the forum, owners rave about the quality.

As suggested above you should really think about how you will use the unit and if it needs to be good for all types of trip - short, stopover, touring etc. We had a Camplet and found that although it was definitely easy to put up we found that it had some drawbacks for us. Despite it being fairly quick you still need to put the whole thing up for just an overnight stop. We also found it overall too small for us for longer trips (we are a family of 4). We also didn't like not having the ZIG. We changed to a Trigano Galleon as it has much more flexibility. We can erect the cabin or the cabin plus the small porch awning for weekends and stopovers and then we have the option of putting up the large awning plus the porch if we want for longer trips. The downside of this is that inevitably if you put up the entire unit it takes time and involves poles etc but we find the space available outweighs this. It's absolutely massive and we've been comfortable in it for very long touring summer trips. Enjoy your search!

I've owned a Camplet in the past and currently own a Camplair now (although I've only been away in it once so far). The Camplair will offer you more room, more value for money and more storage inside than the Camplet. After one trip away I can't fairly comment on how long it takes to put the Camplair up as I haven't had much practice!! However as a 5 ft 4 female I can put the Camplair up entirely on my own and it's very light and easy to maneuver.

I think we are going to go to the Caravanning and Motorhome show in a couple of weeks and take a look at the Trailer Tents. I am edging towards the Camplair.

There's one for sale on ebay at the moment (not mine)!

Where do you live? Camperlands in Manchester have a Camplair on display that you can have a proper look at and see it being put up. They also have Camplets and folding campers on display so you'll get a good feel for what's what.

Also think about whre you're going to store it.

My camplet is in a standard size garage with 2 motorbikes and is really easy to move around.

It's all a compromise. Make a list of what you're looking for if you get 80% i'd say its right for you.

Also remember its not so much the time it takes to put up, but what else you have to unload, unpack and set up.

Not all camplats have ZIG's. A simple setup with a groundsheet will suffise for a short overnighter.

After a long think, I am going to continue with tents for the time being, probably another season. We are going to go along to the motor-home and caravan show to look at the trailer tents, etc to get a proper feel for what we want. Many thanks for the advice it has been very helpful.
