Does anyone know what's the best stuff to use to sterilise the water system on my folding camper, to include the heater (heat should kill most bugs), hoses and water container.
I use liquid chlorine at work and have chlorine granules for the hot tub at home, so could use that I suppose, just not sure if it thats the best stuff to use.
If you read the instructions on a Milton sterilising fluid container it states that it is not recommended to use with steel components that's why it's used for baby utensils because they are all manufactured from hygenic food graded plastic. Inside the hot water tank is the steel immersion heater so Milton is not ideal as it doesn't destroy the harmful bacteria known as the Bio-film. However, 'Puriclean' is safe to use with stainless steel components plus it destroys the Bio-film and is the recommended sterilising solution for boats, caravans and motorhomes. You can find more information about the product below.
Thanks for that, I will try and find somewhere to buy some from. I will probably never use the water as drinking water but better to be safe than sorry !
From my work knowledge, I know that legionella bacteria does not multiply above temperatures of 50 degrees or below 20 degrees, but when hot water is stored the temperature should always be above 60 degrees which should kill off the bacteria. You can only get legionaries disease when it's airborne, such as in water vapour and you breath it in, which is why you should be careful with hot water, especially when campers and caravans come out of winter storage and you fire up the hot water systems for the first time of the season !
Halfords or any caravan accessory shop should have Puriclean.
