Hi everyone, I am back again, given up on motor homes after the last disappointment, and a whole winter of discussion,or in my case being told, we (ha) have decided on a trailer tent. Much cheaper, which makes me happy and look quite easy to tow and set up.
There is only us two and Pasha a rather large but lovely Doberman but my wife has just had two hips replaced and waiting on the knee so a tent and low level sleeping is out for her.
I have looked at about everything on the internet and we are off on a two hundred mile jaunty to camperlands today to have a look see.
I rather like the camplet models buy they are pricey and I like many of the other models. I suppose my question is please could anyone share some experiences and perhaps advice or guidance on trailer tent purchase and such like.
Vast question I know but just some initial thoughts would be wonderful. I don't mind new or used two beds cos I snore like a train, allegedly, I've never heard my self!!!!
Just got a new estate last year thought it would tow the world now I have been reading up it seems not. It is a Dacia Logan mcv 0.9 turbo petrol thing, I think from looking it is 550kg un braked and 1110kg braked. So I presume this will limit me somewhat. Must confess I don't understand it very much.
So everyone was so wonderful when I was asking about the motor home I am just asking again please.
With car you have for a reasonable motorway towing performance you need to stick to lighter trailer tents 500kg or less not the heavier folding campers that can weigh 900kg.
I can't really comment on trailer tents because as soon as we saw a pennine fiesta 2 plus 2 we just decided it was the one for us (and the dog!)
My wife has had a hip replacement and suffers from joint pain but she has no problems with the FC and wishes she had done it years ago!
The Fiesta is 750 kg and braked so would fit your car.
Having said that and with the proviso I know nothing about the performance of these small engined cars I would suggest whatever you tow is going to be a problem going up hills of any consequence!
Modern small turbo petrols have better torque than larger non turbo petrols of same bhp but less than diesel of same bhp. It's the torque that is the pulling power uphill so 0.9 turbo petrol which is the Renault engine should be ok for light trailer.
Thanks everyone for the responses. Went to Camperlands have to say by far the worst place I have ever been supposed to be the biggest and best in the country, it had about eight on show and the place was filthy.
Very sad as I hoped to have picked one today. Still we shall continue looking
Bought my Trailer tent from them and after sales has been excellent.
I also had a Dobbie lost her a couple of year back, very sadly missed they really are like no other dog, would have another tomorrow but swmbo is not ready yet.
It is still a fair way from East Yorkshire, but have you considered the Manchester Event City caravan and leisure show? There are usually a few trailer tents and folding campers there to at least give you a better idea of what you want, or better still what you definitely don't want. Or the NEC in February? We had a trigano folding camper, 750kg braked, which was great as far as it went and towed well behind a petrol Zafira auto. Heavy canvas to put up the awning though and the main part still needed pegging down. We progressed then to a Pennine Pathfinder, basically a very large canvas caravan folding down to a large trailer. Build quality very good though. Got fed up of putting it up and down in the rain, but still used it for six years before the Adria. Smaller Pennine always seem good quality, but do not have a loo. Hope that your search is successful.
Another vote for the Fiesta or the Countyman both the same really just a little different inside for 2 people the Fiesta has more floor space. We had the Countryman and really loved it, ours was older and the canvas for the awning was quite heavy but I believe the new ones are lighter, anyway you would probably be able to manage without the awning and to set up the cabin and beds is simple only needs one pair of hands it will be up in about 10 mins too and there is no pegging needed. if you don't need the awning and travel fairly light I think your car will be fine. Im sure they will be on show at the NEC in Febuary they were there at the last show
------------- its our imperfections that makes us perfect
Thanks again everyone for such valuable advice, it is very much appreciated.
" also had a Dobbie lost her a couple of year back, very sadly missed they really are like no other dog, would have another tomorrow but swmbo is not ready yet".
We know how you feel they are exceptional and we buy everything to fit around her - Cars, houses now tents but they are worth it
We have a 1997 Conway Challenger which we tow behind our asmatic 1.9 non Turbo diesel Peugeot Partner
Plenty of room for the Mrs and I and our Staffy. Very easy to set up, 10 minutes or so, and about 40 minutes if we use the awning
Only weighs about 700 odd kgs loaded, and tows well. Being narrower than our car, no need to mess about with extra mirrors.
The only negative for us is no toilet, but that's going to be sort once the weather warms up
I think you maybe need to look passed any cosmetic opinions about camperlands. My wife and i travelled up from hampshire with an overnight stay in ordr to buy our Camplet.
I would re-consider camperlands. There are plenty of reports on here ringing their praises and the camplet - for us anyway - is a fantastic piece of kit. Ok its a tad expensive for new, but we store ours in garage along with other stuff so its not left outside so there are no storage fees.
At about 250 kgs (dont quote me on that) it can be pulled by just about anything and is very easy to move around.
And i dont care what anyone says, it will take about 30mins to erect propery. Its setting up everything else that takes the time. But for us, if it does rain, we can get the camper open and tent up in a couple of minutes which means we can work from inside, in the dry, to finish the set up.
