I'm not quite clear as to what your question is ...
The fridge has a two position lock at the top of the door ... one locks it shut/sealed, and should be used whenever you are running the fridge ... the other position keeps it very slightly open ... which you should use when not running the fridge ... eg when in storage etc ... then there will be no, or minimal, smell.
Yes if you shut the door when not using it, say at home or in storage, it can go mouldy inside. You need to leave the door slightly open to let some air circulate.
Possibly what op means. Does fridge as fitted need to be sealed from outside so Co fumes do not enter living space when fridge is run on gas. Answer would be no providing fridge has flue that vents to outside.

Thats correct although current standards say it should be, so maybe were the op's question comes from. As old a older unit it is fine.
