OK just tying this one up, great replies folks, many thanks.
No it isnt a braked trailer.
Re the speeds and gears, I tried pushing it to 70mph (tsk tsk) a couple of times and tried using 5th and even 4th gear at the same speeds but no diff.
However today I was chatting to Mr Caravan in my office about remaps. We then go on to my issue and he said that with the same motor (big chunky Volvo SUV diesel) he pulled a big FO caravan with no problems at all, however if he stuck his little trailer on the back and filled it to the brim with rubble and stuff, boom, he has EXACTLY the issue I have, he knew precisely what I meant as I described it. Once he offloaded the trailer at the local tip and headed home, no more issue. His is a no brakes trailer.
So I think that is it. When it is loaded up, it is just that bit heavier and the car doesnt so much as struggle to pull, it just has to cope with a slightly naughty child hanging off the tow bar. Mr Caravan also reckons the lack of a towing damper on the trailer (I think caravans have these?) will make it more noticeable. I will try taking it out completely clean, nothing in it to check the theory.
