Seems an odd idea at first, I know, but I have a towball mounted bike rack which I was wondering if I could use at the rear of our Conway Crusader?

Does anyone know if this would be possible?

As my car's towbar is detachable, I can't use any of the MaxxRaxx type bike racks, so I'm a bit limited on options.

I usually have a roofbox as well, so I can't roof mount the bikes.

not sure its the best place for that much weight, 150kg plus on the rear of the fc may make it very unstable...



i would like to take my kids bikes this year and in a simalar situation, cant find a bike rack to fit the boot hatch of my car. tempted to strap them on top of the trailer securely, piece of boars on top to protect the camper, couple of brackets on the board and should be ok..

Also have to consider if the bikes would hide the lights on the Conway , if so you would have to sort out a extra socket and wiring for a trailer board.


Have seen couple of trailer tents/folding campers with a metal frame over the top which was somehow attached to the chassis at the sides.   Might be worth doing a search on all the previous postings.   "Roofbox on Trailer Tent" or similar

It wouldn't be anywhere near that weight. The rack is 8kg, my two bikes come in at around 25kg, plus a few kg for the towbar itself would all come in well under 40kg

Hi Steve, good question. I've just looked and I see they've now given various types or rack, posh names. But I would say it's this one: https://maxxraxx.co.uk/products/2-4-5-bike-racks/pioneer/4-bike-pioneer-flange-black

When I had the towbar fitted, I gave the fitter the mount and he put my towball on the bracket. I'm in work now but when I get home, I'll take a photo and add it here for you to see.

Yes, talk to MaxxRaxx ... brilliant advice and help!

They do do set-ups for detachable tow bars.

I wouldn't put a towbar carrier on the back of your FC ... weight problems and snaking are likely to result.

When I had a Pullman, I did mount one roof carrier across the pull out bed support bar, and carried one bike that way and two on the MaxxRaxx.

Worked well ... towed all over the continent without any problems with viewing lights through spokes ... but also had a spare tail board light in case.

Thanks for all the replies. Problem is that my towbar is a vertical detachable swan neck. It doesn't have a plate or flange - I have a bracket hidden under the car which the entire piece locks into, similar to this:

I will call MaxxRaxx, though, and see if there is anything they can suggest.

I'm not worried about weight issues with a rear carrier - I can use the nose weight gauge and balance out the awning and poles inside the camper to counter the rear weight. I'd still be nowhere near the maximum laden weight

It's not just a question of balancing it out .... extra weight on the rear of a single axle can lead to snaking issues ... whatever your nose weight.

40kg for the towbar fitting itself, racks can wiegh in the region of 20kg, plus up to four bikes( yours are pretty light compared to some.) Perhaps 150kg is an over estimate but I'd expect your maths to double....

Regardless it's an awful lot of wieght to hang on the end of a camper.

Ah I did wonder if it was a Swan neck and that will cause problems for a Max Raxx. They do have a solution but it's about £150 on top of the cost of the rack.
