So just had our inaugural run out out in the Conway Countryman and we're hooked already - loved every moment and off to Settle next weekend. Can't wait.

I'm not used to towing but I'm aware that there needs to be a fairly even distribution of weight. Other than the standard fittings the only extras carried on the trailer were the awning and poles. It wasn't jumping all over the place but there was certainly a bit of rocking. We're using a Renault Captur to tow so the weight limit is fine.

Any tips?

You're not alone.

I can only recommend taking things more slowly.

You're possibly used to quicker starting and stopping, and that will need to change. As well as keeping the speed down to a level that suits the trailer, especially where the road/track is not nice and smooth.

But I suspect you already know that?   


It takes a little practice.

Is your tow ball at a height which allows the trailer to sit fairly level?

Remember max speed for towing a trailer is 60mph.

You dont say what speed the trailer rocks.

Is your nose weight correct? Have you checked the tyre pressures on car and trailer?

Thanks for replies. The only thing I haven't checked is tyre pressures. According to foldercamperinformation.com it should be 35psi.

I towed a Pennine Sterling without an alco hitch/stabiliser and we upgraded to a Pennine Pathfinder which has an Alco, the difference was quite marked, the pathfinder very stable and a pleasure to tow.
There was no 'rocking' movement at all.

We tow with a Citroen Berlingo Plus.

Have just changed to a small 2 Beth caravan which has a Winterhoff hitch, again very stable to tow.

Update

I had the awning and poles stored in the middle to front of the trailer, moved them middle to back and the kangarooing disappeared.

Tows like a dream now.

As you have moved the poles back a little I assume you now have a gap/empty space in front of them if so as a precaution I would place something light weight like pillows in front of them incase you need to brake harshly the poles could slide forward and damage the furniture facings
