Hello All,

I'm a completely naïve to camping other than a couple of times down at Glastonbury in the late 90's in a tent! Cut a long story short:

I've brought a Conway Countryman, 1994, seems in really good condition but before using it, I really want to ensure the safety of my family (my beautiful wife, two young girls and a stupid Labrador). The trailer has the hob, grill and also the under floor heating unit.

Should I get it all checked out before using? Thought of taking a carbon monoxide detector but would rather be far more cautious. Any advice and help would be truly gratefully received, thanks in advance.

We had our 1997 Countryman serviced for peace of mind and so glad we did. The previous owner had tinkered with the brakes and they needed to be completely overhauled, the gas connection was the original and so were the tyres so needed to be replaced. I would definitely not use the heater without it being serviced.

Thanks Homebird. Yes we have the trailer booked in for a mechanical service this week and we've already replaced the tires. It's really the gas and the under floor heater that concerns me, just not sure where or who would be best to check it out?

We got a mobile caravan engineer to do ours. Just check that they are Gas Safety registered.

Thanks Homebird. We've had the trailer serviced, the electrics checked but still not entirely sure if the fridge is actually working as I'm led to believe they don't make a noise.

The heater is working fine apparently so we are off tomorrow for a couple of nights at a place nr Ashford, Kent, to try it all out!!

Takes a while for the fridge to cool. You can often tell if it's working by feeling the top external vent which should get slightly warm.

We find the fridge works best on gas. Think its to do with them working on absorbtion method (thats why they are quiet, no compressor). They also need to be on the level to work most efficently.

Really? We find it more difficult to get going on gas, a cinch to switch on the electric. Done this for 18 years in our Pathfinders without any trouble at all.

Haha, I would Hairytoes but the wife would probably prefer to use me as the miner's budgie!

Well, we had a great time on our first camping expedition. Broadhembury Park is a lovely place to stay and the kids absolutely loved it.

As for the Conway Countryman, the fridge was working fine, much to the relief of me and my beers. The little freezer compartment even froze some ice cubes within a couple of hours.

The only problem I think we have is without a leisure battery the 12v electrics aren't working off the 240 hook up, which the instructions on the electrics box seem to suggest it should. Any ideas whether this should be the case and what the problem might be?
