I am concerned... I have a 1986 Combi-Camp Sport 58" model that is in very good shape... Does anybody know how the canvas was treated for water repellency?.. As far as I know it does not leak and I have been in some rain without it leaking... I have heard of UK folks talk about Fabisil or something like that for treatment but I can't find it in the states... Unless I am looking for the wrong product... Would a Combi pro give me a suggestion on treating my Combi-Canvas...

Hi Osgood, the stuff you are looking for is Grangers Fabsil waterproofer, not sure if it is available in the states but if you do a Google search for it you may find somewhere close to you that stocks it. If not look out for a fabric waterproofer. Most camping stores will have a similair waterprofer for tents/ trailer tents etc. sales centres will stock a similair product to Grangers Fabsil.

Hope this helps!

Hi OsGood, as a fellow sport owner I recognise someone with great taste.

I agree with everything Papa Pip says. There must be camping shops over their that will offer a product for waterproofing canvas tents, it's just that over here Fabsil is a brand name that everyone knows.

There have been a few threads recently on a cheaper alternative to Fabsil which have proved equally as good.

Thats a neat website you have there.

In your local DIY store look at the cans for sealing bricks etc.  In England it is called Thomsons water seal.  On the can it should state that it is suitable for canvas.  Hope this helps!

Thanks Folks... I am just a bit paranoid when it comes to my Combi-Camp... I don't want to take a chance on damaging the canvas.... These campers are rare in the states and everyone wants to see it whenever we take it out... There is a company called 303 sealants and they told me I could use there products but it would need cleaned well and all exsiting water proofing removed before I use it... That scares me!!.... I like that Sport you have Bandit...

Thanx OsGood, it's the Plus model, so has the extra bedroom that folds out after the main unit is opened. It's more like a tent extension, as you step down from the living quarters onto the in built groundsheet.

There's only me using it, so I get loads of storage with it, which leaves the main living area free apart from the cooker if I don't put the awning up.

I love 'em. Light, good quality, and as you say, always get comments on it wherever I go.

I know what you mean about being paranoid, I'd be more tempted to stay with the camping shops that sell Canvas tents such as the ridge poles or frame tents, as they will have a better idea as to what works and what doesn't.

HI,,,,,,,,,,,, to seal your canvas, you will have to look around for the stuff used for impregnating, there are several brands on the market, which one there is the best ,????, I have said it before,I will say it again,,, some likes the daughter,--- others likes the mother, --- and they both gets married.           There are also some brands  on water basic, Use a garden flower mist sprayer

when you do the impregnation ,the kind that you pump and spray ,just use the trigger like Wyatt Earp at the OK Corral, hold a piece of cardboard along the windows so that they don't get the stuff. Let the canvas dry completly, before closing the lid.

good luck ,,,,,,,Henning,,,,,,,,,,

Sorry to jump in and hijack a thread with my first posting - I have just purchased a Combi Camp Plus, same colour as Bandit Greys (Year unknown).   Problem is the telescopic frame to the canvas extension looks "wrong" to me although previous owner says it is correct.

It (pole) does not seem to fit correctly and lies awkwardly along the extension floor.    To my minds eye it looks like it should lie along the seam at the end of the extension about 18" off the ground.   This would allow the inner tent to fix to the pole - At present this hangs limply off the roof onto the floor.

I would have e-mailed Bandit Grey directly but cannot see a link - Sorry!!

Brian

Hi Brian

The front frame you mention should run parallel with the ground as you say. Then at the end that pushes against the outside wall, there should be another bar which attaches at either side, and gives a loop of about 18" high  which then folds down onto the floor of the extension to form a support for the bar.

If you do not have this bar (it's like a U shaped loop the full width of the extension) then it is definitely missing.

You're obviously a man of impeccable taste Brian, and if you are going to Lickhill, or the Music Fest, then you are more than welcome to see it in the flesh.

Hi B-G

Thanks for coming back to me on this one.    Bloke I bought unit off had the U shaped bar bent at some wacky angle that did nothing except bend the mounting lugs until they almost sheared.

Have to say though that when the U shaped bar is in the correct plane (as I guessed it should be) the whole thing fouls with the other frame pieces when the unit lid is closed.    At present I am considering carrying the U shaped piece separate and fixing it when setting out the unit using two short bolts with wing nuts - Is this correct or is my frame bent too badly (no way the U shaped but will fold down for transit purposes (it bends out of shape worse than ever during closing process)).

Impeccable taste - Yes - Will not get out and about with unit until we can get used tot he set up and down procedure - Hope we can meet some day - Units would look like twins!

Kind regards

Brian

The rails are unfortunately quite easy to bend. When I first got mine the frame was twisted so much the extension wouldn't slide in which made it difficult to fold into the living area when folding it up again.

I just "bit the bullet" and teased the rails straight. It's been fine since, you just have to be fairly gentle when breaking camp rather than trying to pull it if it doesn't fold first time.

The bottom rail of the U pushes into the corner of the canvas where the groundsheet meets it.

If the bar is totally knacked, then you may get an engineering shop to form a new one for you, using your old one as a pattern.

When I had a Combi Camp Family (think it was a 1988 model),I treated it with Fabsil but my local Combi camp expert who serviced it said I didn't need to treat it as the fabric was cotton and self waterproofing in that the fibres expanded when wet therefore sealing it.- hope that makes sense to you LOL.

Read the article further up the main page about using Thompson Water Seal and a small garden sprayer, very good advice.

I waterproofed mine this year & missed a bit - I found no evidence of self waterproofing when it next rained!!
