Hullo,Bought an old (1980's) Bonair folding camper
I cannot find any crank handle holes nor any other sign or method to move caravan legs, raise the roof nor anything to do anything. No crank handle so would have to get one if needed but can't think where this could be used to help. Can anyone help please to give tips helpful descriptions or instructions to lower camper legs , raise the roof, erect the camper or get anything to move not using phusical force to lift. Thanks
I would think any caravan accessory shop could sell you a crank handle.
Legs usually just wind up and down although some you undo a bolt and they drop down and you tighten the bolt. The bolt usually has a plastic turn handle on it.
Thanks to Rob ,Tina and Navver
Previous owner said never used, never had it up, and sold as a project
With the information and instruction I can have another look underneath the camper.I think the legs may move with the bolt drop down method kindly described because metal flanks no crank handle holes prevent any other method,I think. So should get out and under to soak with lubricating penetrating oil spray until a method can be espied,I think. An old Gumtree sale photograph showed an 8 berth Bon air model up.This is very similar. The vendor 1000+ days ago has kindly offered to fond out a video by this evening. This may help
Thanks again, nice to know someone else is available and with further expected results may give hope
If successful a note on this website to describe will be a pleasure to send
Cheers
Thanks Navver.Today a crank handle has been arranged to collect tomorrow from Adept precision engineers(sheet metal) ltd.The video seen with the box tube crank handle shows a crank point front left of the camper.
My bonair camper does not have the same
However a rod and bar( like a T has been found .This is at the rear with an hole in the bumper to allow a crank handle to reach the rod and bar via the hole in the bumper. Thus the reauest to make up a ceanking handle.
I think the small box of mechanics behind the rod and bar does something, but seems too small to connect to ideas of raising the camper to allow an entry
A spindle has been found in the same rear regiin.Rusted cut wires ( wures connected to each sidevof the camper under the camper may be put to use again( with the purchase of new 2-3mm galvanised wire coupler and ferrules ).The connection to the spindle in the centre below is unclear or if the spindle wires and mechanical box also rod and bar are supposed to be,are or should not be connected at this stage I cannot tell. Why galvanised wires should be attached to the sides, whilst the other end ( ever used?)appears to wind around the mid centred spindle
So the crank handle may only be a step in the right direction while the rusty wires need replacing
Much as I'd like the handle to crank up the roof. One step is better than none. Thanks fir your support. marrowfatpeas1
Dear navver,Thanks for the diagrams. The new crank handle has been tried on the rear hole. This works a mechanism and turns the spindle linked to some rusty broken wire.Yet loosens or makes taught the wires from the spindle to the camper sides, below. No joy then.So the only place a winding mechanism to raise the camper must be a locking compartment door left of the entrance door
This comparemt door is shown in video films yet passed over unopened, uncmented
The compartment lock should be drilled to gain access so fine weather may help.(raining today).A hook end crank handle has been found but does not fit anything,so this may be useful when the compartment is open.
Wonder if my one knows what the compartment holds and this is the winding mechanism to raise the camper?
Cheers John Kidgell
I'm in the process of restoring a bonair 850 6 berth 1981. If I can be any help. I've just finished replacing most of the running gear.
The winch handle should go through the bumper bar and connect to the two pin winch mechanism. The height adjustment works by pulling the leg from the closed position inward and down once in the down position get a large screwdriver or metal bar(I use a bar) put it through the center hole in the legs and push down.
Dear Davoz,Good luck with your handiwork and thanks for the details your sent message holds.
A current Bon air camper sale (Slough) states x2 people needed to put up camper. So my vain efforts to find a loop eye or any other point to connect to a crank handle are a disappointment to bear.Videos show a crank handle point at the front(towbar) The video of the much later model shows this works fine. The camper goes up at the turn of the crank handle.Splendid.So the search for something more primitive the earlier model may have..This is in vain. The winch point(rear bumper) mentioned by you has offered little hope of getting the camper up.The lines to centre spindle, attached either side, use, cannot be described.I think getting the camper up,when done if ever is the main task, unattained to date. The Slough vendor described said x2 people needed to put up camper. So maybe no method other than brute force?
Even so ,unless problem is solved to allow continuance, then,my choice will be to put back on E bay for sale.No use banging your head against a brick wall. Then someone else may be fruitful in action to restoration before holiday time.
Thanks for your help.
