Would you be making the storage box yourself?
I added a compartment to the front of a box trailer a while back to keep tools in. I made it from 18mm ply, glued and screwed.
I bolted through the front of the trailer into the storage box, and clamped it to the draw-bar (it could have been bolted, but I didn't want to drill into the bar).
It was very sturdy; the sides of the box prevented it from twisting, despite being supported only along the centre... I didn't feel it needed any additional support.
It was heavy, especially with tools in! And it didn't look nice, but hey - it was a work trailer!
I think it would have been strong enough with the base and back 18mm, and the sides, front and lid 3mm (with 20mm batten to join the 3mm ply sections). That would have cut the weight considerably...
