Dear all,
I got a Conway Cardinal two years ago - the canvass had been recently replaced when we bought it. Packed it away carefully for the winter, dry. It was stored outside (in lee of the weather, next to the house).
It was fine last year, but this year, a few days ago I opened it up and the canvass was covered with spots of pale mould.
I'm afraid of ruining the new canvass! I can live with it looking patchy, but I'm a bit worried that if I can't get rid of it, it might grow over time, spread, and rot the canvass. It seems to have grown through to the inside, too.
Is there a way to clean it off? I know not to use anything with soap. Is there a purpose-made product? (I've looked, but everything seems to be 'water-proofing' - I'd like to avoid that, given it's new canvass).
Off the top of my head, I've thought of using white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, a steam-cleaner? Would dilute bleach work, and still leave the canvass water-proof?
(I've even thought about covering it with polythene sheet and hiring an ozone machine! It wouldn't look any better, but at least the mould would be dead!)
We had a lot of rain early in the week, and it's still water-proof - would we be better off just leaving it?
It's our first trailer tent - and I have no idea if this is something everyone lives with, or if I should be panicking to get it sorted, before it's too late!?

Kelper – yeah I spent some time reading through past threads, and tips from people on youtube and elsewhere. It seems just about every possible ‘solution’ you can think of; at least one person reckons it’s the best! It’s so confusing… Right now, the mould isn’t too bad, but nice to know there’s an option if I can’t get rid of it otherwise. I’d never heard of that product, so, thank you!
Darren – that’s interesting. Seen a lot of people recommending vinegar, and bleach! And loads of people saying ‘Never, ever, use soap!’ Have you used soap? It kind of made sense to me to not use soap, cos I was thinking it would encourage ‘wetting’? And have the canvass soak up water rather than bead it? But I guess there’s a difference between pure soap, and something like fairy liquid and the like, that has other stuff in it? (In woodworking, occasionally people will finish a table top with soap, instead of linseed or wax. So it must have some sort of waterproofing effect, in that application at least...)
Bob – strangely enough, we had a lot of sunshine yesterday, and the mould does seem to have faded a bit on the side that was facing south. I didn’t know how canvass ‘worked’ - so thanks for that! Your suggestion of cleaning with water and leaving it open in the sun has to be the first thing to try…
So – it’s supposed to be dry tomorrow, and maybe the rest of the week. I shall scrub the canvass with a soft brush and lots of water, and keep doing that for as long as the weather allows. I’ll turn the trailer around so all sides get some time in the sunshine.
I’ll post back here on how I get on, in case it’s useful for someone else in the future?
As Darren said, I don’t think I’ll be able to get rid of the stains; the mould has gone right through the canvass – it’s a shame, cos the trailer looked lovely when we first got it! But hey, if it stays waterproof and it’s not going to rot away? That’s all that really matters!!

Just an update on my mould issue!
So I tried scrubbing with a soft brush and plain water; it looked better! I Let it dry and packed away - next time I put the tent up, the mould was back!
I tried soap, as Darren suggested. I think it did a much better job than plain water, of cleaning the mould off. I hosed down the canvass to rinse away the soap (I misunderstood about the soap - thank you for explaining it!)
Let it dry. Packed away, and a week later when I put it back up the mould was back again! Gah!
I've left it up for the last two weeks - we've had a couple of bouts of rain, and the canvass is still waterproof, so I didn't ruin it!
The next thing I shall try, I think, is steam. I've got a pal with a wallpaper stripper - I think maybe if the steam will kill the mould, at least it won't get any worse...?
Longer-term, I've read about 'silver-salts' that are supposed to prevent mildew on painted walls in damp houses? So I'm wondering if spraying the canvass with something like that might work?
(Of course - I'm just scared of ruining the canvass!)
I think the problem for us is that our house is at the bottom of a valley, between two rivers; it's always damp here. I guess most people don't have this issue!?
Still - if I do find a way of controlling the mould, where we live, well then, it should work for anyone!!
I shall keep you all posted as and when I make some progress!!
