Having enjoyed camping for 40 years and being very reluctant to give it up have recently had our Cabanon Jupiter trailer tent converted in a last ditch attempt to try and make it easier and quicker to erect. The reason behind this is As we are both feeling the effects of arthritis and age is catching us up it is becoming more difficult each year, even for two fit people it can take two or three hours to erect with all the bits of equipment we carry. To try and help I have had the front canvas cut in two which can be zipped together to take some of the weight of pulling a large canvas over the frame.Purchased screw in ground pegs which can be put in with a drill rather than hammering in pegs, Also fitted wheels to the camp cooker which fingers crossed will make it easier to move. We started camping in 1978 with a two man ridge tent and a camp cooker one sleeping bag (the joys of youth), progressing over the years to a couple of frame tents and finally a trailer tent with all the comforts.Hopefully these slight adjustments will give us another couple of years camping if not then it may be time to call it a day and end our camping days. We are trying it out at the end of the month will let you know if all the effort was a success.

Gave up T/Tenting for the same reasons as yurse, i.e. havy canvas, heavy kchen and too man pegs. However bought a cheap (1000pound) light caravan and have enjoyed the outdoors again but miss the smell and sound of rain on canvas. Good luck to you.

I hope all your conversions make the difference. Like you I hate to think about the time we have to give up our camper with it’s sounds and smells of canvas. Good luck.

We also had the same problem with our TT. Changed to a Conway Countryman several years ago. Once we have opened up the main living area the only thing we need to put up is the shelf in the kitchen area. Thats if we dont want to be bothered with the awning. Its extended our camping years

I've always been overwhelmed by the help of others when I'm camping with my two teenage girls. (Sadly the men in our family aren't keen on the outdoor life so I just have girl power when out in our Countryman trailer tent).

If I ever saw anyone even slightly struggling, I would offer as much help as I possibly could. I've also made up my mind to offer a cup of tea those newly arrived and still in the throws of setting up. A nice lady did that for me just last week and it made all the difference to my experience.

I really hope all your adjustments make it easier, but please ask your neighbours because you never know, one day it could be me! :-)

Got an Eriba as my back was causing problems. There's still a little bit of canvas/tent type material at the top so I can still pretend I'm camping.
Love the Eriba but do miss the smell of canvas and strangely I always liked the sound of zips and the sound of rain on canvas.

We also have a Cabanon Jupiter and, like you, now find it quite difficult to put up now that our 2 adult children no longer camp with us. I hope your conversions go well for you as there is nothing quite like camping!

I think that you should consider getting a campervan with a pop up top; a half way house between camping and caravanning. A decent one likely to be pricey though!

Tent conversation update, Pleased to say fixing wheels to the cooker worked brilliantly even over grass, the idea of using screw in pegs with a drill cut pegging out down by half an hour. Easy to use even got the wife using it. Having the canvas cut in half reduced the weight and made it much easier to fit all in all a success should get another couple of years out of it fingers crossed. The last time I erected it took 2 hours that was with help from my son in law. Today me and my wife took hour and half. The only downside it started raining at 2pm and has not stopped since. Re conversation Goes to prove old campers never quit just find ways to adapt.

I'm interested in where the awning was cut and zip added and who did it for you. We're planning to get back out in our FC but the awning is heavy so doing what you've done sounds like a great help.

Thanks. I had a chat with them recently about altering our awning but they felt it wasn't worth the cost.

I was a avid tent camper, and changed as age and pain got the better of me,, I purchased a conway clubman 20 years ago bang it all came together hardly any setup needed, and have comfort and smell and rain on canvass with the added bonus of underfloor heating,, These units or so adaptable and still look good even now 20years on,, Thousands of miles later and still loving the buzz camping gives you, Sun rain and all.....
