I think you'd be better off doing this the other way around. Work out a short list of cars you'd like and see what will work for you from that. Diesels have more grunt when towing but your FC shouldn't need that much unless you are doing a lot of hill towing. Anything that's 1.6 litre up should tow what you have though, as long as its a car for which a tow bar is actually avilable.
As long as the car is powerful enough and weight ratios are correct (your camper probably 750 kg) the choice is endless!
I think you need to consider what you are taking in the tow vehicle, kids, dogs and other paraphernalia which we all end up taking!
I now tow with a Peugeot Partner 1.6 diesel Outdoor. Ugly as sin, aerodynamic (joke) but the dog loves it, sliding rear doors and huge payload. For everyday use a reasonable 5 seater, take the rear seats out ( minutes) a huge van. Really practical but not going to make anybodies pulses race in the design stakes!
I tow a '95 Conway Countryman with an 08 Astra 1.9 TDCi.
Absolutely no bother at all. The trailor is slightly narrower than the car, so no mirrors needed.
The torque of a diesel does come in handy, But as much as that, a six speed box and cruise control are just as welcome when you're on a long motorway trip.
3 tips - Whatever you tow with, get it serviced regularly. Replace your Trailor Tyres at least every 5 years (the reinforced sidewalls degrade over time.) And spend and extra few quid getting a really good tow-bar fitter - dodgy tow-bars are your worst nightmare.

Hi thinking of changing our car and just wondered what cars people tow there folding camper with... petrol or diesel.
Previous car (towing Pennine Fiesta) was Hyundai Matrix 1.6 auto. It was fine and we even towed up the A75 from Clermont Ferrand to Montpellier and that is STEEP!
We now use a 2 litre S Max auto and I sometimes forget the trailer is on the back. Great tow car.
I tow my Crusader - unladen weight 1000 Kg with my 1.6 diesel Focus estate. Not a problem. Engine has done over 100,000 now and still pulls up hill with ease.
as an aside to the requisites...... big up to the prat towing an older Countryman,,,, Northbound on the M5 near Devon/Somerset border, around 6;00 pm banging on at 60 mph plus, then pulled out in front of someone into the outside lane accelerating as they did so,
------------- That's not a dog....... That's a Schnauzer
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
In the 90s I towed our Fiesta (similar spec) with a 110hp Rover 216 petrol. While the performance was good, I wished I could see over the top of the camper, as it was just too high. So an MPV or SUV type car would let you see what's coming up on you better. Even in France at motorway speed, sometimes it's good to be able to judge when to pull out.
