I'm looking for a trailer tent for the family, (4 kids, my husband and I) We have a Vw T5 to tow it BUT the problem is, my husband has only recently passed his test so we have a restriction as to the weight of the unit. We can't exceed 3500kg and the van maximum weight is 3000kg. Are there are 6 berth trailer tents that come in at 500kg or am I looking for something that just doesn't exist? Am I better looking for 4 berth and stick 2 kids in a 2 man tent? Thank you all in advance :-)
Most trailer tents will come in at less than 500kg. Can I ask why you are looking for a trailer tent ? A driveway awning type might suit you better or a standard tent, depending on what your use is.
we want to have the beds off the floor really. Most I've looked at come in at 650kg that's why I asked. OK just googles driveaway awnings, they look good! So that might be an option.
There will be two weights one which is the weight of the trailer tent and the other is the max weight ie that will include all the stuff you might want to add to the trailer. So for example my sunn camp had a weight of 375 kgs but gross max of 550 meaning I could add 175 kg of stoves chairs bedding whatever to it
This is what the DVLA says about cat B licences and towing:
Category B - if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997
You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).
You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg.
The rear entry Dandy campers are 500kg MAM. The designer or discovery versions are 5 berth. Of these the older ones which were Discovery would be best as it will give you parallel seating inside.

My husband passed his test last year, there are different guidelines for passing post 2013, maximum being 3500kg. It's crazy, I passed my test pre 1997 and can drive loads of things, compare it to his licence and there is nothing he can drive! lol This is the gov.uk guidance:
You can already tow trailers up to 750kg.
You can also tow heavier trailers if the combined weight of the trailer and vehicle isn’t more than 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM).
So yes he can tow a 750kg trailer but he can't exceed 3500, the van is 3000kg so I'm guessing max for trailer is 500kg.

No he can tow a braked trailer upto 750 kgs behind a vehicle not exceeding 3500kg mam
Or a heavier trailer provided the two MAM's do not exceed 3500kg
