Hi, we are due to go away in our Penine Aztec folding camper this weekend. The weather is forecast to be strong winds and rain. The rain we have dealt with before but unsure about the safety of our camper in strong winds. We obviously don't want any damage to it or ourselves and I just wondered if anyone could offer any advice to improve safety. Have read messages concerning campers and awnings. Our camper does have an awning but we won't be using it. We don't have skirts either. Advice please!

Most folding campers are well enough designed to stand up to strong wings but if your worried still you could use some storm straps something like this ( hopefully link works if not search eBay for them)https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eurotrail-Awning-Tie-Down-Kit-Storm-Straps-for-Caravan-........

Facing the bedroom end into the wind may help. It makes a smaller area for the wind to get at.

and moving the car into a position so it gets hit by the wind first will help a lot! or if you are really concerned turn the camper so one corner towards the wind, this will spread the pressure out

I have a Conway Cardinal hardtop which I restored. It has a awning which has 2 storm straps. I added 4 stainless steel eye bolts for storm straps to the roof corners. We have not been camping in high winds yet, time will tell. The camper has a skirt in awning, will a skirt all around be be worth having? Roy.

Thank you for the advice so far, we are planning to pick up some storm straps tonight. Is it best to have the awning up? We thought it might stabilise it, but some of our friends (not camping experienced) seem to think not.

I would not put up awning if you do not need it. Poles can rattle loose and become detached from camper just put a storm strap over main body of cabin. you'll be fine.

Make sure you run the storm straps across the length, not the width ... i.e. pressure onto the struts, not on canvas/poly cover.

Also, probably worth putting some rub guards between the straps and the material surface (on top) and material and struts (underneath) e.g. cardboard strips or such like, so as to prevent any damage from rubbing caused by strap movement.

We were camping once in South Wales n the coast and whilst we were there there was a yellow weather warning for high winds off the Bristol Channel.
I put the car in front of the camper to provide shelter but to no avail.
We actually spent a very uncomfortable night in the car.
In the morning I fully expected the camper and awning to have been damaged but both were OK.
The noise in the camper was horrendous making sleep impossible and in the dark when you are at your lowest ebb your imagination runs riot.
Some people might scoff and call me a fair weather camper but if the forecast is that bad, is it worth going?
Apart from an endurance test where is the enjoyment?
Couldn't you just go the weekend after?

we have a pennine pathfinder and whilst in wales we had terrible storms. We had a strap over the awning and basically hoped for the best. bar the noises and fair bit of movement it held firm, all but 3 pegs. as above, we positioned the car the best we could to help and just hung out for the ride. the kids and wife must of found it theraputic, they slept soundly all night. but i would 100% recomend getting a strap or 2. bet bit of kit we have got for high wind.

We had a Pennine Pullman in the Scottish Highlands in some pretty severe winds and had no problems apart from lack of sleep from it flapping about !

If the worst comes to the worst, do you have appropriate insurance for if your set up causes damage to someone else's set up/vehicle?
