Hi all... first up thanks to all who post here... I don't often post but I've done a bunch of lurking and the info has been invaluable.

Right... I recently acquired a 2010 Crusader... we're very excited to get out in it soon (hopefully Easter if the weather is remotely passable). It came with the awning and a small 3rd party porch which I might replace with an Air Porch at some point, but what I would like to add is an annex/extension for the main awning to use as an extra bedroom. Actually looking at the original inventory from when it left the factory our Crusader originally had an annex added as an optional extra, but it must've got sold separately when it changed hands at some point (though bizzarely it did still come with the bedroom inner! at least that's one less bit to acquire).

I'd like to go with second hand, because... well, Pennine prices , and I'm not in a rush. The question is, how cross-compatible are annexes?

Ours is the silver Crusader, I believe the second year of the acrylic Isabella canvas. First question is can I go for any of the "acrylic period" annexes (i.e. post 2009)? So for example will an annex made for a 2016 Pathfinder awning fit my 2010 Crusader?

And then the second question - is the annex (or extention as Pennine now call it) the same as Isabella's own one? They look pretty damned similar to me, and Pennine even use a standard pic of the Isabella annex (attached to a caravan!) on their website. But I do remember seeing a thread about the zips being different maybe? And if they would work together, would it be an Isabella 220 or 250? I guess the real question is are there any users out there successfully using a non-Pennine Isabella annex on their Crusader or Pathfinder awning? and of so which one?

It's all so confusing! Thanks in advance to anyone who has any useful info!

Happy camping everybody

Can't answer you question but why don't you ask Pemmine, I have found them helpful. If you are on Facebook join Pennine Owners club, plenty of help there.

Thanks Joe... I wasn't sure about asking Pennine since I'm sort of asking what's the best way to avoid shelling out on a new extension from them, but maybe I'll give it a go.

As for the owners club, I did have a look at their website but the forums seemed dead, it didn't occur to me that all the action might have moved to Facebook. I usually avoid Facebook like the plague, but might hold my breath and dive in if needs be

Hello. I really don't think you can just take an isabella extension/annex and zip it in.

We have a 2009 acrylic crusader that came with an awning but like you wanted annexes. From what I read, there were 2 choices:
a) Pennine annex (new - expensive, 2nd hand - still very expensive and like hens teeth)
b) Universal annex - but they don't zip in, just somehow strap on (much cheaper option) but we didn't like the sound of that.
So we gave up on the idea... until by chance on gumteee I came across 2 "coal" annexes from isabella (made for their caravan awnings) that had been specially adapted by TVS to fit on a pathfinder acrylic (same as crusader acrylic) and also had specially adapted inners!!! So we jumped at the chance of having them. Not actually set them up yet (new to us this season) but they came with all the correspondence between the person who comissioned them to be adapted and TVS. I've filed it all away but can dig it out for you - should say whether a 220 or 250 annex was used as the basis for the modification. You can then look out for one of those 2nd hand and get TVS to modify for you too? It would certainly be worth a call to TVS to ask them. The advantage is that the coal annexes have windows (with a zip on cover) and additional door which the pennine annexes apparently don't?

By the way, I've just sent my main acrylic canvas to TVS to do some work - they were recommended to me by Pennine (as well as recommendations on here). Pennine told me to double check the stitching along the central seam of our canvas (along the tallest/central pole) as it's been found that the first acrylics had stitching missing. I didn't think this affected us as we've never had a leak.... but low and behold when I checked, ours had 2 long sections which were unstiched!!!!

Excitedly making camping plans for this year.... just can't make up my mind at the moment!

Thanks so much for that incredibly useful info Poppy!

That seems to confirm the zip difference between Isabella and Pennine annexes (annoying!), but the TVS option is certainly intriguing...

If when you next happen to be in your files you could have a quick look to see exactly what Isabella annexes they used for the conversion that would be hugely appreciated (don't go out of your way though, as I said, we're not in a rush!)... at least that would open up another possibility.

Very handy tip about the top seam stitching too... I'm planning to set everything up on the driveway for a good check over when we next get a dry spell for a few days and that will be the first thing I check. Can I ask how much TVS are charging you for the fix?

All the best and thanks again!

Hi Bazpoint,
Did you get any further with your investigations into the Annex options? I have a 2010 Pathfinder and have exactly the same queries if the off the shelf Isabella annex will fit and is it the 220 or 250.. Poppy had great info all be it disappointing if we need to have the zips altered to make them work.
Any further info you or anyone has would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The mystery continues.... I do have renewed hope though... I came across someone selling a camper of the exact same model and year as mine (2010 Crusader), who also had an annex they said they might be willing to sell separately. It turned out they were a bit far away and didn't want to post it, so I didn't buy their one, but in the course of a few messages with them it turned out that they had bought an Isabella (not Pennine) annex, and they insisted that it works fine for them (without any modification). This, if true, is big news... they weren't sure if it was a 220 or a 250, but they were certain that it was a 'tall', so that at least narrowed down one option. (they said they would check the 220/250 thing when they got a chance, but I haven't heard back).

At this point I think I'm just going to 'take one for the team' and have a gamble on picking one up. I've come to the conclusion that a 250 is the best bet. Then there's the whole question of pre- or post- unicut - I've no idea what to think about that, but I'm assuming post-unicut. I'm waiting for one to become available that's a decent price and either within collection range or offers shipping. I figure as long as I shop sensibly, if it doesn't work out then I can just resell it for (hopefully) a minimal loss, and if it does work then big win!

I will of course post here again with any results.

Also just to note - I emailed both TVS and Isabella with enquires about the whole Pennine/Isabella annex question, and got entirely nothing back in reply from either of them. So that wasn't much help.

Hi Bazpoint,
Thanks for your prompt and valuable update, I too emailed Isabella and received nothing back... the whole unicut question is news to me so I’m pretending I didn’t read that! I too am thinking of just going for it on the assumption that I can resell at minimal loss so if that happens before you I’ll repost too. Cheers

I have a 2010 Crusader DL bought from Camping International sold a kidney(not) and got the Pennine annex only because I was told by Terry that the zips are different he did double check because the Isabella is cheaper I also personally think the Isabella is better because you can zip your awning side panel back in and use the rear door

Ah, more info, thanks Russ (even though it's bad news!)...

For me too the features of the Isabella are part of the appeal... ideally I'd have an Isabella 'coal', partly because it has the zip in window covers, which the 'sand' model that Pennine seems to currently be offering lacks. And partly for the entirely vain reason that the colour scheme will match better.
