Well I have finally taken the plunge and joined up after lurking on the site for a good few years now!
After having a couple of caravans, tents and trailer tents over the last 25 years, we have just bought a Conway Crusader 2005 Folding Camper. Which we are all very excited about but I am worried we were duped.
We were told the canvas was dry and waterproof and when we looked at it erected the liners and bed pods were in situ and we didn't think to ask to take them down...
I have just put it up in the garden and with the roof liner and bed podsnot in place, the canvas looks a little threadbare in places (not faded but thinner material).
There is also a section of the canvas (to the left of the door as you stand outside looking in) that has a few tiny splits in.
We had a very light rain shower and nothing seems to have come in through the patches or the splits but I am wondering if I need to be worried about these, and if so, what should I do about it?
I have been reading the forum posts regarding cleaning the canvas (thank you to everyone who has contributed to the many posts), as the canvas is covered in marks and bird poop, and plan to use a soft dustpan brush to try and get rid of the "flaky" mess and then a new car washing sponge with lukewarm water to try and clean some of the other mess off. It looks like a lot of old dirt but also some grease and possibly dye from the canvas (blue dye on the light beige panels). How hard can I rub with the sponge without doing damage to the canvas?
Does anyone have any suggestions of other cleaners that I could use that won't affect the waterproofness?
Many thanks for reading such a lengthy post.

Take all the innner linings/pods down, then, give the canvas a good soaking with a garden hose and check for any leaks.
If it has been dry for a long time, the canvas will need soaking to restore the waterproofing ... the fibres expand when wet, and so seal any 'gaps'.
I used Isabella awning cleaner on our Pennine some years ago ... it did a fantastic job ... but, worth trying the milder routes first ... anything you can do to avoid having to re-proof is good ... re-proof as a last ditch option ... then you may have to do it every couple of years ... though ours lasted for five years without needing another dose ... then we sold it ... the buyers have not reported any problems over the last four years (we are in sporadic contact with them).
Ours was a 2006 model. So, probably, pretty akin to your Crusader.
It got a little wet yesterday, we had a few showers but nothing heavy enough to check properly so I'll be turning the hose on it tomorrow!
I'd definitely like to avoid reproofing it if I can, so I'll try the milder routes and hope for the best. I realise I won't get it sparkling like-new clean but just a little less grubby would be nice!
Thanks again
