After getting flashed in France a couple of times I found that my trailer tail lights aren't working. ( Raclet Quickstop)
I have brought it to two different places today. I had assumed it was bulbs but apparently because the trailer is European and the towbar is British? (I'm in Ireland) the connectors don't fit together well and the tail lights are not properly connected. Has anyone else had this issue. Bringing it to a trailer specialist tomorrow but wouldn't mind feedback from someone who's experienced this.
It sounds like you need a new plug or socket because the existing ones are very slightly different sizes, there is nothing wrong with the towbar itself.
Did you notice any problems when you checked the lights after hitching up each time?
We had a similar problem once which we cured temporarily by wrapping some insulating tape round the plug so that it was a tighter fit in the socket.
The normal procedure for anyone towing a trailer is to check the rear lights before setting off, so without being over critical, the main problem is with yourself for failing to check the trailer lights which is part of being a safe responsible tower. The problem could have been detected earlier if the above advice was followed but good luck and hope you get the towing electrics rectified.
I always get one of the kids to stand behind and check, usually putting on the brake and indicators to do that but where I was remiss was in assuming that if all those lights were working that the tail lights would also be working . We don't usually tow after dark so I wouldn't have had the lights on on on the car itself so the tail lights are rarely used. In France, we ended up driving late and staying in a hotel one night which is how we discovered this. Ihave been given the name of a trailer specialist who I wish I'd gone to in the first place. The first me mechanic thought I needed an adaptor but it doesn't seem to exist?
Yes I fully understand now. With my Volvo it has daytime running lights you see so when I connect up the towing plug, the caravan marker lights and rear tail lights instantly illuminate. The only two remaining are the indicators which confirm operation via the vehicle dashboard trailer display (which I can visually check at the rear) and the brake lights which I need an assistant for.
