Hi
We have an older opus and the canvas is quite dirty with spots of mildew.
Because this is over the whole area, I want to get it washed and cleaned and re proofed properly. Can anyone recommend anywhere in the Surrey area that could do this?

Try CIT Camping in Walton, if they can't help they'll probably know a man who can.

I have no idea if this applies to Opuses (Opi?) but I know that with Pennines and Conways re-proofing the canvas negatively affects the resale value. If it really needs doing than so be it, but it could just be that it needs a good soaking for seams to expand & reseal.

The cleaning is a different thing.... not sure about that. Are any Opuses actually real canvas, or is it a synthetic?

It's a real canvas...

Hmmm, yeah, in that case I'd definitely be wary of re-proofing (basically once it's done once, it then needs doing again regularly after that). If I were you I'd seek advice from the owners club (they probably have a Facebook page). There should be someone there who knows the best course of action (and can maybe recommend specialists for you).

I’m sorry I can’t help with how to clean your canvas, but as for the rep roofing, I have to disagree bazpoint, we had to reproof our canvas, but since then, five years ago, we haven’t had to do it again, and we never have so much as a droplet of water leak in.

Fair enough, I'm only going from what I've seen when doing a lot of reading about Pennines/Conways over the last couple of years (again, Opuses may vary!).

The second post in this thread is a pretty good summary rather than me just regurgitating it: https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=10&TopicID=192053 but I've seen the same advice many times.

I also keep an eye on FC sales (no particular reason, just interested to keep up with the market ) and I know that often one of the first questions on an older model is "has it been reproofed", with "yes" usually being seen as a bad thing. It's not the end of the world by any means, & if it's gottta be done, so be it, but thought it was worth being aware of.

We all have our experiences with these things. Doesn’t mean any of us are wrong or right. I just wanted icornish to know we hadn’t had any problems with reproofing. I agree with you on Opuses though bazpoint, they may well be different to Pennine/Conways etc. I too watch FC sales. I can’t imagine ever selling ours, just the thought makes me miserable, but it’s good to know market prices and what people are asking.
