We have a lovely Pennine Feista 2+2 2004 with a motor mover fitted. My husband hates towing and dreads the thought of me suggesting a trip away. So we have decided to sell it, and buy a small campervan with a drive away awning instead. Unfortunately with the Corona Virus doing the rounds, We doubt we will be wanting to go abroad as we usually do. We can't make up our minds on what to do for the best. To sell this year or wait till next year, and use it ourselves this year? We may get a better price for it selling this year. Any thoughts would be very welcome.
if hubby hates towing then why not you doing the driving? I know which I would rather be doing sitting doing map reading (stressfull) or just driving (much easier)
Has he towed it much?
It's a very easy rig to tow ...
Maybe a towing course would help ... they are excellent.
A Campervan would be a lot more expensive ... and ... maybe? .... mean having another vehicle to tax/insure etc sitting around all year?
Thanks for the replies. He has towed for the last 20 years. We have a very steep drive to get the camper up and down. The motor mover is fantastic, but it's not enough to change is mind. I hoped it would be. He his ready for retirement, and he agrees that a camper van would be much better. If it means we can still go camping. I am all for it.
We have talked about selling our Pathfinder FC once we are unable to put it up easily anymore. The thought makes me want to cry even though that time is still a way off. We will probably buy a caravan when the time comes. If my husband said he wanted to buy sooner than we have planned, but it meant we still went camping I would go along with it, Just so we could continue to camp. As marg6 says why don’t you tow? Assuming you can drive. I do all our towing. Hope you are able to come to a mutual decision. 😊
Hi, I can drive, and have for 30 years, but I wouldn't dare drive it up and out of our drive, and am not a motorway driver either. I too will be heart broken when it goes. We had a cruiser before this for 15 years, and we both love camping. Our minds are made up as to selling, it's just a matter of when to do it.
Other than reversing, I cant quiet see how driving a camper van can be any easier than towing a camper, It really is six of one and half dozen of the other. If someone feels uncomfortable towing a camper,
how would driving a camper van make them feel more comfortable. I dont understand the motive for it.
I wish you well in whatever you decide to do.
I would normally recommend selling now at the beginning of the season as people are normally buying at this time.
However things aren’t as they would normally be due to the Corona Virus threat.
Its a difficult decision as you say. I think I would advertise it at a price that is a little more than you realistically expect to get for it then you’ll have some haggle room if you get a prospective buyer.
Now is the time to sell anything to do with camping and I don't see the Coronavirus making much difference. I know if I could afford a campervan rather than a tent or trailer tent I would certainly buy one. You can have an awning on the side or the back to give that camping under canvas feel.
A few years ago I bought a caravan. I had never towed anything in my life before but seemed to do alright, apart from the fact I was always nervous when towing in case something went wrong. Eventually I decided it was more relaxing just to throw a tent in the back of the car and I sold the caravan about this time of year for the same price I paid for it.
I would say...go for the campervan as both of you will feel more relaxed and happy. On the downside of course...it is the best time of year for selling camping gear but probably the most expensive time for buying, unless you are quick before prices of campervans start rising.
The lockdown changed all our plans in the end. We are keeping hold of it till next year, and hopefully we will be able to use it for a few holidays ourselves
If you want to sell then I would suggest now would be the best time this year, a lot of people will be looking for tents etc because they wont be able to go abroad this year.
I’ve been selling all of our old tent camping kit we no longer use and it is going very quickly for good prices.
I know what you mean about the towing. I don’t mind driving across a busy city in the rush hour, but I hate motor ways! My husband does all the towing, as I don’t like driving his bigger car either.
He hates city driving so it balances out.
Thanks for the replies. We are looking forward to using it this year after all. The one problem we are finding is trying to find a site with toilets and showers open. We are happy to use the porta potti for no 1s only and wash downs in the camper, but its hard to find a site with facilities open.
