I can't quite remember how i did it, but I made the bed on the right (as you enter) into a double size by using the sofa cushions at double height, and adding extra height on top of the cupboard at the end of the sofa. I added a mattress on top and the slight bumps didn't seem obvious. So as my memory serves, I was 3/4 on the sofa and 1/3 on the bed. It meant the curtains couldn't come down, but it was much more comfy than the teen on the floor.
I can't remember why i didn't go down the bed in the middle route?? I think this worked for us and I stuck with it.
They're narrow beds and the older the kids get the harder it is to fit everyone in.

how old are the kids? if under about 10 then they should be able to sleep 3 across the bed, rather than the normal side to side
