Hi everyone,
delivery of our new Pennine pathfinder is due for April 2021 so would like to get as organized as possible before delivery. (purchasing a battery) At some stage (sooner than later) i will be getting a motor mover fitted. I am thinking a 110ah 12v to handle the motor mover. Will that size fit in the battery compartment ?
Thanks in advance and happy new year to you all.
Keith

You really need to know the dimensions of your battery locker, batteries are available in different case sizes for a given capacity, low profile etc.

Generally lockers are 'standard' bought in items by van manufacturers and can be common across different brands, in my experience 100/110Ah batteries are often a really snug fit in locker (don't forget to allow space for connector clamps and cabling and usually a battery tray), so you really are only talking millimetres to spare. It's pretty essential to know the locker dimensions (and tray dimensions if supplied) before buying battery to suit.

Why a battery tray as well as locker you may ask! You really do not want to risk ANY leaked battery acid getting to the structure of your van, it would do serious damage. Batteries are vented to prevent explosion and can expel acid under fault conditions - overcharged, internal shorts etc.

Some people recommend even larger than 110Ah batteries for motor movers, but none of the manufacturers do, 110Ah is likely as big as will fit your locker anyway and should prove more than adequate. Only time you are likely to need a larger battery is if you spend a lot of time 'off grid' and the battery becomes run down and you move your van great distances and/or on long extreme slopes on the MM.

We found it was not possible to fit a 110Ah battery into our caravan locker. Well, it may have gone in but would have been a struggle. We chose a lower Ah rating (90 I think) which has proved adequate for the motor mover. The size battery depends how far you need to move the unit and a Pennine pathfinder is probably somewhat lighter than our caravan.
However, on site we always opt for an EHU so no further loading on the battery and a chance for it to recharge.
If you are relying on your battery for on-site power as well, perhaps a solar charger?

Big thank you to Monty 15 and Acient uncle for your replies.
May have to lower battery size. If we where off grid at any time it would only be for a weekend and motor mover would only be used on the level and for short distances.Have taken on board all the other points you both have raised. Once again, thanks.

groover57, Our caravans are probably 30-50% heavier than your Pennine, my 100Ah and Ancient Uncle's 90Ah battery have both proved themselves to be more than adequate.

I've trundled my 1310Kg van 100yds or more on storage site between bays and done the usual shuttling back and forth to extract/position correctly in bay, checking the battery charge before and after with a proper battery condition/state of charge meter, it didn't even flinch, I couldn't detect any discharge!

Your lightweight Pennine would be fine with a much smaller battery for the use you describe, but for peace of mind to cope with discharge in storage and any off grid use, I'd go for biggest that comfortable fits locker (probably 85/90Ah) rather than worry too much about cramming in a 110Ah.

Probably just as important as Ah capacity is quality! Ensure you buy a decent NCC verified battery https://www.thencc.org.uk/Our_Schemes/ncc_verified_leisure_battery_scheme.aspx

There are endless 'cheap' re-labelled as 'leisure battery' car starter batteries on the market, they fail early in the deep discharge/occasional recharge role of a leisure battery, false economy, get a decent NCC verified battery, look after it by not letting it stay discharged, and it will serve you well for years.

Hi Monty15,The Pennine comes in at 1000kgs so you are right your unit is 30% heavier.Have looked at your attachment and i think a category B would more than cover my needs.Have noted theirs and your comments regards quality.looked on a well known auction site and some of the reviews speak volumes ! good to have manufactures to choose from.
Thanks again for your time.

Battery type is also an important consideration, regular SFLA leisure battery will do the job but you may want to consider an AGM or Gel battery for the benefits that they offer over SFLA, for around double the price.

Even better still LiFeP04 drop in replacement batteries are coming down in price all the time, a 100Ah model will provide almost double the usable capacity of a 110Ah FSLA battery or AGM.

Have a look at the reviews for SOK battery, great spec for the 100Ah model, and for a LiFeP04 the £600 price tag is a bargain compared to brands like RELION and Renogy etc.

Another great addition to any type of camping unit is the Aili Battery Monitor, I have been using one for almost a year now, and it helps keep my 120Ah LEOCH FSLA cheapo (£90) battery in tip top condition.
