I am thinking of buying a Pennine Pathfinder that has the inbuilt toilet etc. My problem is my back gate is only 4 foot wide. Is it possible to fix a jockey wheel to this particular camper so it goes on its side

Are you thinking about the way some trailer tents can go on their side?

If so, no.

Nigh on impossible the weight and size of a pathfinder would not facilitate this .I would even say any folding camper .30 years ago we had a Conway Coniston trailer tent, that said this could be done with a frame .I looked in to this and found that was very very difficult and it was hardly any weight compared to a folding camper .

I'm in two minds as to whether this is a serious question or a wind up as it's so far fetched, but we'll go with the benefit of the doubt in case it's just ill considered, and offer apologies for any bluntness.

Unless I'm seriously mistaken about the Pennine Pathfinder you are talking about, then there is no way you could tip/store that on it's side for a number of reasons!

Firstly they weigh in the region of 850Kg as a minimum, that's the weight of a small car! - how on earth would you routinely and safely lift and tip that weight fully onto it's side, AND back onto it's wheels!

Secondly, it's highly unlikely that the body has sufficient strength (even if you made a custom 'cradle') to support that weight, it would distort/collapse under it's own weight. It was only ever intended to take load on the chassis/axle, not side panels/body frames!

Thirdly, once you had the thing on it's side supported on 'jockey wheels' as you put it, I think you probably mean casters, it's a un-braked runaway disaster that you would have little control over, let alone struggle to move! An 850Kg 'runaway' sounds horrendous and more than capable of killing and injuring anyone in it's way!

There's a risk of residual fluids, such as in water drainage system and fitted toilet system, due to the rotated angle, leaking out into the interior and doing damage. Everything that was not literally screwed down would need removing to stop it tumbling around in the tipping. I'm not sure the fridge would recover from long term storage on it's side either, any sediment in the refrigerant may settle into narrow pipework and block it!

If you had done even the most basic research, it appears the Pathfinder is 1.9m high, which means it still wouldn't fit through a 4ft (1.2m) gateway even on it's side!

I think it's a pretty definite NO! ..... but if the enquiry was genuine, then seems only polite to justify why. My initial reaction was probably not what anyone would call polite!

Thankyou everyone for your input. We had a trailer tent many years ago and had a jockey wheel on the side so that it would go down the narrow passage way. But, it was a very basis trailer tent and not like the ones today. I guess I will have to try and find a lock up garage before I buy one

If the bar is like ours it has two ( for the want of a better word) metal tabs. Flip both up pull out the bar, flip the locking taps back down, and push the bar in. It will lock into the position you need for the bed bar to to sit on
