I’ve been trawling through these and many other forums on waterproofing, the general consensus seems to be don’t bother, you should need to, once you’ve done it you’ll need to keep doing… etc. However, here’s the situation I’m currently in;
Purchased a second hand trailer tent, a Sunncamp 400SE, last month. We don’t know the age of the unit however.
We took it out this weekend just gone on the east coast, Norfolk. As some of you might know, the rain was apocalyptic during most of this weekend!
Despite this, the tent largely held up fairly well other than about 4 points where there was water coming in. Under the circumstances, we didn’t think that was too bad. But, feel this does need to be address, especially as one of the leaks was directly above one of the beds.
Most people say don’t waterproof, it’s waterproof itself and just needs weathering. If you waterproof it, it’ll need to be regularly done.
So here’s my main question, I’m pretty sure the guy we purchased it from said he had waterproofed it in the past, so does that now cancel out the “don’t waterproof” arguement as it’s already had at least one coat, and mean I do need to waterproof it? Or do I continue with the “weathering”? Bearing in mind, it didn’t rain the middle day, and started leaking again (arguably more so) when it rained day 3.
The tent is currently standing erect on my dads campsite, in the hope the next couple of days will be dry, fingers crossed.
Many thanks, Niall

Many leaking canvases will self-seal after a few 'wets' ... but, if they don't, maybe try proofing just in the areas that are leaking ... i.e. don't do the whole thing.

Yes, if it's already been re-proofed it'll likely need doing again if it's now letting water in. The soaking and drying out method really only works on canvas which has got a bit dry (so the fibres swell then close again) and not on re-proofed canvas.
