Having trouble with my FC camper at the moment, there is definately a problem between the car/towbar and the tailights on the FC. The problem is as follows....

Indicators - Work fine (always have).

Brake Lights - now working (dodgy connection to both bulbs!)

Side lights (four little bulbs towards the bottom of the unit (was all four lamping, but now just the left hand unit as you look at them from the back).

Tail lights for dipped beam - have never worked.

I have relplaced the plug to no avail, and have tried connecting a tailboard that I use for a trailer, the light unit is simpler (instead of seperate tail and brake lights it uses stop/tail light bulbs), but even with that I only get tail lights on one side (but brake lights on both sides) this would hint that there is a problem with the tow bar electrics, I will change out the socket today, but wondered if I should be looking for blown fuses or dodgy connections elsewhere?.

Lastly, is it normal to have single element bulbs in the rear light units?, I would have thought all bulbs would have been stop/tail bulbs.

If it's the same side which is out in each case, I think you're right. Right side light should be on pin 5 (probably brown wire) and left on pin 7 (probably black wire). As it now happens with both the trailer and the board, it would point to one of these being dodgy in the car side of the wiring.

There's obviously nothing technically wrong with having separate bulbs for side and tail. My '98 Cruiser looks as though it also has separate bulbs, though, funnily enough, I don't think I've ever looked at them lit! I'm always the one pressing the pedal with SWMBO or one of the kids checking something happens. Cynically, I suspect the light unit manufacturers are in the business of having ever flashier displays to sell to trailer and caravan manufacturers.

Good luck

Sounds like the connectors to me aswell. There is not normally a fuse between the connection to the vehicle wiring and the 7 pin socket, so provided the car lights work OK, then there are no blown fuses. A lot of these drawbars are wired with the "Scotchlock" connectors (those little blue connectors that fold over and cut through the outer sheath. These are not that reliable, so you may find that if the connections on the socket, or the pins themselves in the socket are not corroded then it is one of these that has lost a good connection.

It sounds like you have got most of the diagnostics out of the way, so only the the above is left to check.
