I first towed my fiesta 2+2 on a VW Golf GTTDI.
What made me think putting a tow bar on a car with sports suspension and low profile tyres was a good idea god only knows!
Being a very aerodynamic car with 6 gears I really didn’t know I was towing .
Changed to a Peugeot Partner (the most practical car I’ve ever owned) and was great for camping.
Unfortunately, aerodynamically it was like a brick, Towing mileages dropped to about 32 mpg on a long trip.
Navver, no it was a diesel.
The journeys I am comparing were both trips to Turkey. Same route, one year after another. When we couldn’t cope with a 3 door car whilst camping we got the Peugeot.
The VW had 6 forward gears, Peugeot 5. Rarely had to change down with the VW on quite steep inclines, Peugeot struggled.
Both cars have computer readouts and I know how much diesel was consumed, I am welded!
The Peugeot was a more practical car but not so economical.
I was not doing 56 mph though!
Compared to the VW golf the partner was , aerodynamically , like a shed.
We had a diesel Ford Kuga to pull our 2005 Pennine Pathfinder and got around 37mpg, the Kuga was never a fuel efficient car so we replaced it this year with a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Now most weekend trips are done 90%+ just on electric power with the engine only generating power occasionally as Dorset is a hilly county.
On longer trips that require the engine to generate power we are getting 78mpg. Only problem as more move to electric is theres no charging in caravan parking at services
