When putting up the awning of our combi camp at the weekend, we found that all the awning poles were really sticking and hard to move. What can I use to lubricate them without damaging the canvas? Not oil I shouldn't think.   There's been a similar thread on the message board a little while ago, but I can't find it so hopefully some of you nice people out there can help me?

im just guessing but what about the white grease ,that they use in engineering in the food industry

We used Mr Sheen wipes they worked really well.

what about some sort of silicone spray the stuff like you get for making your dashboard shiny

Vaseline won't damage tyhe canvas, but it gets a bit messy. Is there something there making tham stick, and all you need is a really good clean? If it's rust, clean it off and spray with WD40, then make sure it's really dry before using the poles again.

I would be very much against using any type of grease because it may well attract dirt and dust.

JanP is right, any well known Silicon based furniture polish will do the job.  Or you can get a can of silicon spray from any reputable camping/caravanning shop.

Yes, Mr Sheen or Johnsons furniture polish or similar. Definitely not WD40 as it could damage the canvas/waterproofing.

What about rubbing with a lead pencil - graphite is a good lubricant - remember that good old O level chemistry?  Allotrops of carbon of something - hexagonal plates which slide over each other?  Works with zips anyway.

we have always sprayed ours with fabsil and then wiped it and that has helped - that wont damage the canvas. We find the middle pole of the awning sticks more than the one on either side, especially when wet - which might explai why fabsil seems to help

Its probably the extra weight of the canvas when it gets wet pushing the pole further into the other one which makes it stick, as the centre one takes the bulk of the weight of the awning.
