we have just got our trailer tent, everything ready (we think) really really excited until..................... one of the kids said what about the telly?(shame they dont appreciate the great outdoors like us!) now please forgive my ignorance but could we take the little portable telly without blowing up the campsite electrics or do we have to have a 'special telly' ! be gentle with us we really havent got a clue god help us !!!

Telly's don't take up much power, you will have no problems.......apart from getting a good signal. Make the kids go without for a week. It will do the good and if its the first time camping they shouldn't miss it to much.

We take a portable, doesn't take much power.  Useful on an evening when  it is tipping down outside.

That will very much depend on where you are. A regular indoor aerial should suit if you are in a reasonable signal area. Last time I had a telly on holiday was in a canal boat, and we always had a reasonable signal with what appeared to be a basic aerial on the roof, but then canals tend to be near areas of high population density. There's a fancy one you often see on the tops of caravans and mobile homes, which is multidirectional, but I understand it's fairly expensive. The site may be able to give you some indication of local signal strength.

We have over the years got no better signal with an expensive arial than a cheap one. The trick is to get height ours is on a pole outside.

Argos do a full kit Arial,cable and poles. It clamps to the towbar and as Jan_P said its getting the hight that helps

We took our tv to cornwall last year - with a little indoor aerial - could only get channel five with it so went to argos and got a 'proper' aerial then discovered the lads had not tuned the tv in properly so the proper aerial is now in the garage still in its box.

See how you go with an indoor and then get something as the need arises - wish I'd done that now. I've got a useless aerial in the garage - the boys said they will have it when they leave home - hope they hurry upl

We always take our portable, great for rainy days, don't care what people say about 'proper' camping - 3 bored kids on a wet evening is not fun.
Had great reception with a little tv top aerial in Derbyshire and Norfolk, but got nothing in Isle of Wight, so this year we've bought an extension pole to attach to the A frame and are using a normal aerial with that, so we'll see how it goes.
ps - We also take the in-car DVD player, and attach that to the portable tv so they can watch their favourites.

Currys are selling 14" flat screen lcd tv for 180.00,doubles as flat screen computer monitor. just bought one for next weeks trip,takes up less space in the boot, than portable with video
