Hi Babsie, like anything to do with camping you have to work out what you're going to use it for. You have to match that to the power output of the gene. Of course you might want to use gas instead of petrol, another consideration.
Then you become one of the "video nasties that wake everyone up at 1 o'clock in the morning" and you get dirty looks when people walk by when it's running. Oh by the way I've got one, I only use it if I cant get leccie.

If you think things are coming your way... You're probably in the wrong lane...
nothing wrong with gennies as long as they are silent runners i think some people go camping just to have something or someone else to moan about as the saying goes if you dont like it dont listen ... i have never found the noise of gennies desturbing they only hum and burrr if that bothers you then you must be living on a remoat island theres always a noise of some sort you can hear at home if you open the doors and windows
And that's the point Speedi - I do hear noise at home and I want peace and quiet when I'm camping. It's one of the reasons I choose camping over other types of holiday - so I can sit in the field and listen to the sounds of the birds and animals around me instead of the noise of the neighbours cutting the grass, the kids over the road with their stereo on full blast, etc. Gennies make a noise (even the supposedly 'silent' ones) and I cannot understand the need for one except for medical reasons. What's wrong with a decent battery - you can always get a solar panel to keep the thing topped up if you want.
How long are you planning to camp for with no electric? I use a big leisure battery for lights tv water pump etc and can last for two weeks no problem, use fridge on gas.You don't need to go to the expense of a generator. BTW I do noy live on a remote island and I'm with you scampi on this one.
I didn't realise a battery would last that long like I said I am fairly new to this. I would only be camping for two to three days without electric, what size battery would I need. I would prefer not to use a generator, also they are expensive.
We have an 85Ah in our Pathfinder and haven't managed to flatten it yet - we've stayed 4 days (3 nights) on a no facilities site, so everything (lights, water pump, toilet flush, fan for blown air heater, sockets so OH can watch DVDs) was on the battery (fridge, water heater and heater are gas) with no problems. My parents have an 85Ah battery and a solar panel - lasts them for 4 weeks on a site with no electric. I don't think you'll have a problem for a couple of days - just teach your camping gang to turn lights off!
