Hi, I’m looking to equip my Nimrod TT with a permanently wired electrical system both 240v and 12v. Any help on the following would be much appreciated…
240v
Fine with 240v indoors (I do sheds too) but I’m presently searching for a caravan style hookup socket for permanent mounting on the trailer body, and a purpose made distribution/circuit breaker/rcd unit for campsite 240v (probably the sort of thing you’d have in a caravan). Would this type of thing include a transformer/link to the 12v circuit, to run the 12v stuff and charge a leisure battery when connected or would that be an additional bit of kit? Does anyone have anything like this or know where’s the best place to get them?
Also, is there anything special about the flavour of 240v supplied at campsites?
12v
Entirely in the dark here. Any info on:
Ø battery life (e.g how long a fridge will run off a leisure battery)
Ø 12v distribution, 12v wiring components available for camper/caravan
Ø Components required and how to wire up so a leisure battery can charge from the car circuit when travelling and via the 240v hookup socket when on site or at home.
All will be most gratefully received (shortcuts to websites with info especially helpful, thanks.)
Cheers all

Hi Tyger,
Carn't help with the tecnical stuff , but I can tell you that a fridge will drain a leisure battery in about a day, did it my self when we had an old static caravan a few years ago, it didn't have electric so used my battery, bad move, you only use the 12 volts for traveling and I always make sure I unplug the fridge as soon as we arrive so as not to drain the car battery, most of the time our fridge travels in our tt now, not connected, have left a message on your other thread, only get to have the fridge in the car, if my oldest son dosn't come with us.
But the 12 volts is very good for lights it use to last us about 4/5 days but that was for 3 lights on at night, you can tell when its going down as the lights get dimmer and dimmer.

Hello Tyger
Doubt very much if you will get an RCD with a built in 12 volt charger, and even if you could the cost would scare you off I am sure!
If you are an electrician ( are you?) you should have no problem sourcing a suitable RCD (30m/a)and a DIN enclosure for it, just remember that the fitting of an RCD is an absolute MUST. Most sites nowadays have RCD's fitted at the outlets, but I would not trust em as far as I could throw em! have tried too many of them that fail to trip on test!
If you intend to hook up a transformer to charge the 12 volt circuit, you will also need to rectify and smooth the output from it, probably much less hassle to buy a separtate battery charger and dedicate it to charging the leisure battery.
As far as the "flavour" of 230 volt ( we dont talk about 240 volts now as we are in the EEC!!) at sites is concerned, it tastes the same as the domestic stuff! only problem being most sites fit 5 amp MCB's, so running your 2 kilowatt electric kettle, the wifes hair dryer, the microwave, an Uncle Tom Cobbly an all, will mean a trip to the D/P to re-set the MCB!
Cheers,
Paul.
