Greetings all

Been away for a while - cant remember the last posting I did in here.

We have a camping trailer that has done two x 1000 mile return trips to France.

I have heard about wheels being serviced to avoid them coming off.  Happy about servicising the electrics/tyres, but do I need to take the wheels off?  It is now stored in our garage during the winter..

Any help much appreciated.

Hi

All you should need to do is check the wheel bearings once in a while.

2000 miles is unlikely to have caused much wear.

Lift/jack (don't know how big a trailer) up one wheel at and spin it by hand listening for a grating or rumbling noise.

The other way to tell is to grip the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions and try and to rock it on it stub axle try again with your hands at 12 and 6. If there is wear in the bearings you will be able to feel a little movement.

The bearings have to get quite bad before wheels start falling off.

If your not happy any garage will be able to quickly check for you. And you should be able to get any parts you/they need from Tow sure, Indespension or a good camping shop.

I think Haynes do a caravans and trailers book which may be of use? 

If the trailer is braked you may want to check the brakes are ok to?

Its a franc camping trailer about 5 ft by 3.

The other thing I was wondering was during the long winter when its not being used, should I take the wheels off, and rest it on the axle?

Hi David,

I wouldn't worry about taking the wheels off it does'nt sound like there's much weight on them with such a light trailer.
