Hi all,

I need to buy an air compressor for ensuring my tyres are at the right pressures (Pennine pullman), as the ones at the local garages seem to be out of order most of the time.  What type of compressors are people using and are they as accurate as the ones at the garage.  Any advice will be greatly appreciated. 17

Cheers

There is no such thing as an accurate guage, especially on compressors. I use a cheap 12v compressor which has a light built in etc but never use the light, and I use a small pencil size pressure guage to double check now and again. Its never far out though.

You can get the compresors from places like Halfords etc.

I use a digital compressor from Argos - set the pressure that you want your tyres and it switches off automatically when the pressure is reached. Always check with a hand held gauge even though the one fitted to the compressor is probably more accurate than those at you local garage (unless it's only a few days old).

I always carry a compressor in both my cars, they are donkeys years old, one has a gauge but it's not much use, one doesn't, but I  use a digital tyre pressure thing from Halfords - they're only a couple of quid each and pretty accurate, the batteries go flat after a year or so and you have to buy a new one before they get really old and inaccurate.

In all but really major punctures, the compressor can put enough air back in to get safely to a tyre dealer, saves having to change the wheel - my Jazz has one of those space saving tyres on the spare and it handles really badly with that on so I only use it a a last resort.

Hi AntMacc,  I can't remember the name but it cost around £24 - £25. It has a small lamp and  a detachable digital tyre pressure gauge.

I still use another digital tyre pressure gauge, that I use for my motorbike tyres, as verification.

Hope this info helps

I carry one of the 'Power Pack'  devices which incorporate compressor, various lamps, 12v cigarette lighter outlet, and battery for jump starting.  Found it most usefuL

However, as already stated, do not rely on the pressure gauge on these things.

I use a £4.99 digital tyre pressure guage from Halfords.  Toleance + or - 1psi.
