Hi,

Was walking around Cotswold View Camping Park over Easter and noticed just how many (>50%) 4x4 vehiclees are towing. I run a VW passat 2.8 V6 4 Motion estate & use for towing & country-wide fast-business. I tow a folding camper. The space is good but not quite to the big 4x4 but wondered that considering ....... are the views of those having chosen 4x4's but after everyday DRIVING & weekedn Towing HOW DO YOU VIEW THIS ?

Cheers

Matt

We looked at loads of 4x4s for lots of reasons, first was the space,we thought that many 4x4s didnt offer any more space than an average estate car eg the range rover & jeep. The next was seating. We bought a Pajero because of the large boot space, the fold down extra seats, the high level of equipment, its excellent off road ability(the freelander is hopeless off road as it has poor ground clearence)and as a family car we feel very safe in it.It is also cheaper to run than the alternitives we looked at,Volvo estate etc. Also the fact that if someone is stupid enough to pull out in front of you,2&half tons of car will go through most things!!!!!!...Its a fantastic tool and would only get rid of it to buy a newer model.

Have you witnessed the 4x4 crach and safety demontrations on Top Gear and Fifth Gear?  The Land Rover wasn't impressive.

All older 4x4s have an awful crash test reputation.  I had a Pajero 2.8TD, and yes you do feel safe above everyone else, but I also know that if I wanted to stop damn quick, 2 tonnes of metal work underneath me will just not allow it to happen quickly, especially in the wet!

Also my bruv has a CRV.  Stick it in a roundabout a little quick then try to turn it...it goes straight on.

For the few times a year I will get stuck in the mud camping, I'd rather keep my Laguna estate and get the field owners tractor or another 4x4 to pull me out!

Sorry, just being honest.  They ain't the safest, they ain't economical and they ain't quick enough.

Even the newer 4*4's have, in reality, an at best average crash test saftey record. Many are very poor.
